David Kordansky Gallery seeks a highly motivated, extremely organized, and collaborative individual to join our team as Communications Manager. Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Communications Manager is a critical, cross-departmental role, responsible for supporting a range of significant functions of the Marketing and Communications team, including working to advance visibility for the Gallery, its artists, exhibitions, and fairs. This position is a full time role, Monday – Friday, and may require flexibility for additional hours based on the needs of the gallery. A generous benefits package is offered.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the guidance of the Director, Marketing and Communications, actively plan, implement, and manage effective and comprehensive PR strategies and campaigns for the Gallery’s exhibitions, art fairs, and projects to increase exposure for the gallery and its artists

  • Develop creative and compelling press pitches and story angles, outreach to editors, writers and other press contacts, ensuring placement of articles in targeted local, national, and international media outlets in accordance with overall PR strategy

  • Maintain and develop strong relationships with local, national, and international press contacts

  • Identify and propose PR initiatives and methods for promoting awareness of the Gallery and increasing exposure for the Gallery and its artists

  • Research, write and/or edit various written materials including press releases, press updates, narrative biographies, and other collateral press materials; or work in close concert with the Associate Director, Publications, Editorial, Publications, and Public Programs and the Staff Writer, who lead on press releases and texts

  • Facilitate all inbound press inquiries and image requests in a timely manner, seeking artist approvals as needed

  • Draft press materials and create press kits, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness

  • Work closely with the entire Marketing and Communications team to align the content calendar across all channels including email, social media, and website

  • Update and maintain press pitch status grids, press reports, and press lists

  • Monitor a wide variety of media outlets in local, regional, national, and international markets to identify press opportunities

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Our ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented and creative with exceptional organizational skills; an excellent verbal and written communicator; and possesses the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. We seek candidates who are extremely self-motivated, responsible, and efficient, and who hold a sincere appreciation for and experience with navigating diverse cultural spaces. In addition:

  • Knowledge of contemporary art preferred

  • Four to five (4-5) years experience working at a contemporary art gallery, contemporary art museum, arts PR firm, artist studio, and/or comparable arts organization preferred

  • BA in Modern or Contemporary Art History, Communications or related field preferred, but consideration is given to candidates with related experience

  • Experience communicating and working with artists/artists’ studios preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • High attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and ability to implement and manage multiple projects and timelines

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively about the gallery’s communications program

  • Strong negotiating skills and ability to creatively resolve problems

  • Skills in a Mac-based environment required, including: Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Sheets) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Basic knowledge of databases such as Artlogic (or similar) preferred

  • Basic knowledge of sales platforms such as Arternal, ArtBinder, and Artsy preferred

  • Fluency in multiple languages welcomed

  • Preference is given to candidates with expert knowledge of global contemporary art, including art of the African Diaspora, Latin America, and Asia

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • This is a full-time, salaried position at 40 hours per week

  • The pay scale for this position is $65,000-85,000
