About Artists Space:

Founded in 1972 in downtown Manhattan, Artists Space has successfully contributed to changing the institutional and economic landscape for contemporary art, by lending support to emerging artists and emerging ideas alike, often controversially contributing to and critically challenging the intellectual and artistic status quo in New York City and beyond. Artists Space will open its new long-term home in Tribeca in 2019.

Position Description:

Artists Space seeks a dynamic, creative, and entrepreneurial development professional who cares deeply about artists and has the ability to lead a development program at a uniquely exciting moment – as Artists Space completes a new building campaign, opens a new long-term space in Manhattan, and evolves and expands its operational development strategy. The ideal candidate will have passion for the impact that artists and art have on shaping culture. They will show demonstrated ability to manage all functions of development with a strong focus on relationship management, prospect identification and proposal writing, and the innovative systems needed to support those efforts. Upon completion of the building campaign, Artists Space will expand its programming and grow its operational fundraising to approximately $1.5 million annually, from all sources of giving.

Responsibilities
  • Work in partnership with the Executive Director to create an effective internal and external development effort.

  • Working with the Director and the Board of Trustees, strategically map and implement a fundraising plan to successfully complete a new building campaign in tandem with annually meeting operating goals.

  • Work directly with members of the Board and engage them in all aspects of the fiscal health of Artists Space and encourage their active participation in identifying and engaging new prospects and support.

  • Prepare all materials and briefings for, and when needed, participate in fundraising solicitations; preparation would include research and briefing strategies to ensure all solicitors are comfortable and prepared for making an ask.

  • Write all correspondence, stewardship reports, acknowledgements, and other development materials needed in support of the campaign effort and annual fundraising.

  • Conduct research and outreach into potential corporate funding options with appropriate partners and initiate relationships between the Director and key potential contacts.

  • Conduct research and outreach into institutional, foundation and government partners and initiate relationships between the Director and key new program officers.

  • Develop and implement all cultivation events and fundraising events including the Annual Friends of Artists Space Dinner, and plan and execute all events related to the opening of Artists Space’s new space.

  • Help oversee and collaborate on Artists Space’s ongoing patrons program, including identifying and onboarding new members.

  • Develop and manage all gift management, gift reporting, acknowledgement and recognition of donors.

  • Work closely with the Director and Board to shape, monitor, and deliver stated and annual goals.

  • Develop, maintain and manage annual expense budget in tandem with Exhibition Manager.

  • Provide regular reporting and progress on all fundraising activities.

Requirements
  • Three to six years of fundraising and/or arts sales experience.

  • Proven track record of successfully cultivating and securing gifts across all funding areas.

  • An interest and passion for contemporary art.

  • Demonstrated ability to be creative and entrepreneurial in relationship to development.

  • Excellent management and administrative skills.

  • Experience with capital and endowment campaigns.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Positive attitude and a sense of humor.
