The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a qualified Preparator for the Preparations team located at the Getty Center reporting jointly to the Lead Preparator for installation and the Head of Preparations. Under direct supervision, and working with the installation team, the Preparator installs and maintains permanent galleries, special exhibition and temporary exhibition spaces, and art storage areas through use of appropriate materials, equipment, and methods to display, store, pack and transport works of art. Additionally, the Preparator executes the fabrication, installation, and storage of works of art, and furniture for permanent and special exhibition galleries.

Responsibilities
  • Works on assignments that are routine in nature

  • Assists in maintaining the appearance of the galleries, including cleaning and dusting showcases, frames and pedestals

  • Assists in the movement, packing and crating of works of art

  • Cleans art work and adjacent areas in all of the museums galleries

  • Under supervision, performs basic carpentry and painting tasks

  • Assists in gallery installation and deinstallation

  • Collaborates across departments to fabricate and install exhibitions and supporting materials

  • Collaborates across departments to pack, crate, receive, deliver, and install works of art

  • May develop, install, maintain and operate gallery and showcase lighting, including computer-controlled skylight and shade systems

  • Work is guided by supervisor yet, may act independently to determine methods and procedures based upon expertise

  • Builds consensus through collaboration, listens and responds appropriately to others, and asks questions and offers input for positive results

  • Adapts behavior and work methods, as needed, in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles

  • Effectively handles multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change

Requirements
  • High School/GED

  • 0-1 years related experience

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • License to operate a variety of vehicles and forklifts

  • Competent using power tools, wood/metal shop machinery, and lifting apparatuses

  • Familiar with art object handling and installation, and art object packing and crating

  • Competent in woodworking, cabinetry, metalworking, plastics, painting or decorative finishes, and general construction

  • Demonstrated ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing
