This multi-faceted position requires a full knowledge of art handling safety, as well as an ability to complete the administrative, archival and registrarial steps necessary for safe and efficient storage and movement of artwork.
Candidate must be willing to take on both complex and basic tasks with equal diligence. Responsibilities will include detailed and accurate condition reports, installation and de-installation of exhibitions and client viewings, packing and shipping of artwork, shipping coordination and delivery, installation for art fairs, building maintenance, accessioning artworks, and maintaining supplies in clean, well-organized storage spaces. Candidate should be able to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure and be able to prioritize a range of responsibilities and requests from a large team of people. Attention to detail is essential as well as strong communication skills and ability to follow through with projects. Willingness to assist with personal projects of the gallery owners is necessary.
Responsibilities
Schedule, manage and perform exhibition installations and de-installations, including, but not limited to: moving walls, installing mounts, cases, and varied exhibit components; painting and repairing walls, adjusting gallery lighting.
Assess, navigate and resolve technical and material requirements for upcoming exhibitions and installations.
Receive and return artwork following proper gallery procedure.
Estimate time, manpower, and materials for exhibition installation.
Research material sources, exercise resourcefulness in procuring materials.
Work closely with all members of the staff, especially gallery owners in preparing and planning exhibitions.
Organize and maintain gallery supply closet and operational supplies.
Perform janitorial duties in gallery (floor cleaning, dusting, and basic gallery upkeep).
Identify and rectify safety hazards in the gallery.
Pack artwork for shipment and/or storage.
Work all gallery openings.
Pick up and deliver art works.
Other duties as assigned by manager.
Requirements
2 years relevant experience in gallery, museum, art handling company, or auction house setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of fine art installation and packing techniques.
Ability to communicate well.
Experience with art storage, crating and art fair installations.
Familiarity with PC/Mac computers and ArtSystems preferred. - Knowledge of digital photography and Adobe Photoshop.
Ability to accurately execute detailed paperwork.
Experience interfacing with clients.
Knowledge of construction techniques, materials and tools.
Ability to identify and resolve problems quickly so that installations function smoothly and uninterrupted.
Experience in carpentry and safe handling of power tools.
Self-starter, dedicated, and enthusiastic problem solver. - Experience overseeing a team of helpers.
Able to lift heavy objects (50 lbs+) - Ability to drive with valid license/clean driving record.
Ability to work Tuesday-Saturday and for a few evening events if necessary.
