About the opportunity

The University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia. In the 2018 QS World University Rankings by subject, the school was first in Australia and ranked 16th in the world for architecture/built environment.

The University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is expanding its capacities in the area of sustainable design and is seeking applicants with a demonstrated track record in that area to augment our current academic team. It is expected that applicants will have a successful track record in sustainable design practice, or a well-defined research agenda and that they will be able to substantially contribute to the preparation and delivery of teaching in the school’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Responsibilities
  • teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate architectural science programs, including coordination and delivery of all or part of selected core and elective units of study DESC9200 Introduction to Architectural Science, DESC9014 Building Construction Technology, DESC9015 Building Energy Analysis, DESC9147 Sustainable Building Design Principles, DESC9169 Daylight in Buildings, DESC9202 Water Sensitive Design.

  • attracting and supervising higher degree research students (whether traditional or PhD by design)

  • building research collaborations within the School, the University and beyond

It is expected that candidates will be motivated to work collaboratively with colleagues on research projects operating in the disciplines of architecture and architectural science within the school. The school is focused on the built environment and uses the methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments. We have one of Australia’s best university laboratory infrastructures for research and design in the built environment, including The Innovation in Applied Design (IAD) Lab and the Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Lab as well as lighting, audio and acoustics labs. We have a major and ongoing investment in the Design Modelling and Fabrication lab, including architectural robotics. Our range of disciplines enables us to respond to the great and conflicting global challenges of our time – urbanisation and sustainability.
