At Beam, we’ve spent the last 16 years coalescing multi-ethnic and intergenerational learning communities of youth, artists, and teachers who work together to construct spectacular projects - big and small - that highlight the magic of creative cooperation.
We are a staff of 24 full-time and 20 part-time adults and youth, engaging 7,000 students and 300+ teachers in 28 public schools annually. More than 96% of the young people we serve identify as youth of color and/ or newly immigrated. Our large-scale public artworks reach tens of thousands of people at installations across the city. Our summer camp in New Hampshire hosts 105 campers from around NY and the world for 4 week sessions. In Summer 2021, we will launch Beam Camp City, a camp-like experience for kids and youth on Governors Island.
By hiring a Communications Manager, we intend to further the ways and messages we communicate to youth, communities we serve, partner organizations, current and prospective donors.
Salary: $50000.00 (Annual)
Develop and create compelling narratives that are authentic, inspiring and reflect the power of our mission, work, footprint, partnerships, youth and collective achievements
Manage external communications that broadcast updates, future plans, fundraising efforts, program milestones, etc.
Collaborate with programming staff and leadership team to gather data, information, and documentation necessary for powerful storytelling
Coordinate and manage a database of Beam Center/Camp communication assets including: video, photos, text, physical artifacts
Travel around NYC to capture Beam Center programming in action
Mentor and collaborate with youth staff
Coordinate multi-format documentation of in-person events, programs, workshops, studio spaces, etc.
Draft and publish press releases and articles that generate media interest and coverage
Participate in organizational leadership and board meetings to develop a cohesive development strategy
Qualifications of strong candidates:
Personal relationship/commitment to Beam’s mission and communities we serve
Empathetic and confident visual/copy-based storyteller, with the ability to concisely capture complex experiences and relationships.
Experience using social media platforms, newsletter communication tools in professional capacity
Photography/Videography experience
Photo/video editing software experience
Familiarity with graphic design principles
Highly collaborative, able to ask questions, offer insight, professional opinions, and celebrate teamwork
Highly independent, able to set and manage personal goals, expectations, and schedule
Detail oriented with experience managing multi-faceted projects while meeting deadlines
Imaginative, able to be flexible and resourceful, in the midst of change, uncertainty, and growth
Curious, life-long learner
