About the position

The Curatorial Assistant serves an instrumental role in ensuring that Storm King Art Center’s Curatorial Department meets its goals and obligations with regards to Storm King’s acquisitions, exhibitions, research, publications, and collections management. The Curatorial Assistant reports to the Senior Curator and works closely with the Curatorial team and cross departmentally (for instance, with archives, facilities and conservation, education, visitor services, legal, and external affairs).

Responsibilities
  • Assist with all aspects of the planning, researching, coordination, and installation of Storm King’s annual exhibitions and publications.

  • Manage and produce artwork checklists through the Collective Access database; maintain collection database and files.

  • Conduct and coordinate exhibition research, fact checking, and proofreading for curatorial publications and printed materials, as well as other interdepartmental publications as needed.

  • Prepare research dossiers for Senior Curator and Director & Chief Curator as needed.

  • Research, draft and edit historical art texts for publications, object labels and press as requested by the Senior Curator and Director & Chief Curator.

  • Correspond with artists, lenders, dealers, and other museums regarding all aspects of exhibitions and related publications.

  • Coordinate accommodations, travel and hospitality for visiting artists and other constituents.

  • Conduct VIP tours for donors, artists, scholars and as needed.

  • Conduct art-historical research.

  • Assist in the development of materials for the collection and exhibitions to educate the public, employees and docents.

  • Draft extended texts for wall labels, review tombstone information for permanent works.

  • Coordinate the production of the catalogue, brochures, short films, and websites for yearly exhibitions.

  • Oversee the Collective Access Database to manage internal collection and exhibition information as well as publish museum collections to the public-facing website including locations of all works, basic information, images, reproduction information, accompanying texts, exhibition history, and contact information.

  • In collaboration with Legal and the Executive Assistant to the Director & Chief Curator, manage all incoming and outgoing loans for yearly exhibitions and long-term loans.

  • Maintain and uphold the Storm King style guide pertaining to the Sculpture Guide across interdepartmental art-related documents.

  • Assist in all aspects of preparation for Collections & Acquisitions (C&A) meetings, and Board meetings if needed.

  • Assist with managing the Curatorial budget, process invoices, and W-9 payments.

  • Provide administrative support to the Senior Curator; schedule internal and external meetings and appointments, order, set up and clean up refreshments and/or food, prepare materials and meeting notes as appropriate; assist with correspondence.

  • In consultation with the Senior Curator, keep informed of current activity in contemporary art and sculpture.

Requirements
  • BA or BFA required with a preference for degrees in art history, museum studies, or a related field.

  • 1-2 years of work experience in the visual arts, and/or relevant internship experience required. Knowledge of, and interest in, modern and contemporary art desired.

  • A strong belief in Storm King’s mission and vision, and the ability to articulate this in a persuasive and inspiring manner.

  • Demonstrated passion for the visual arts, with a strong commitment to making art more accessible and meaningful to the general public.

  • Excellent communication skills overall with focus on research and writing skills.

  • Ability to safeguard confidential information and perform with a high level of discretion, professionalism, and integrity.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and to interact with all levels of staff as well as artists, the public and visitors in a positive, professional and friendly manner.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, along with strong project-management skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; ability to learn databases.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and collaborate across departments.

  • Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as appropriate.
