The Position:

The intern will assist in research and preparations for an upcoming exhibition, the Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt. The show will present the biblical Book of Esther through paintings, prints, and drawings made by Rembrandt (1606-1669) and his circle of contemporaries and pupils in seventeenth-century Holland. These images will be grouped together for the first time and will be featured with Judaica—especially Esther scrolls—as well as a range of decorative arts produced within that same milieu. In addition to assisting with research and administrative tasks for the exhibition, the curatorial intern will help with everyday tasks, such as conducting research on historical Judaica in the Jewish Museum’s collection as well as potential acquisitions and commissions.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist in preparations for upcoming exhibition including:

o Conducting comprehensive research on specific objects and questions

o Compiling and updating checklists, and determining where information is missing or incorrect

o Producing and keeping track of loan requests

  • Assist in everyday tasks and short-term projects including:

o Creating a range of presentations on Judaica

o Researching Judaica in the Jewish Museum’s collection.

o Research on potential acquisitions, including locating comparable examples in museums, identifying market values, and investigating the provenance of the piece, especially to determine the ownership and location of the object during WWII

  • Fluency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel (fluency in TMS database preferred)

  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in all projects

  • Effective communication skills

  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills

  • Interest in Jewish culture and history within broader contexts of art and culture

  • Interest in working with a variety of media including Judaica and Fine Arts

  • Reading knowledge of Hebrew; reading knowledge of German, or at least one other European language, preferred
