DIRECTOR, NEW YORK

Tuesday – Saturday (full-time, salaried exempt)

An established contemporary art Gallery based on the West Coast seeks a highly motivated, extremely organized, and collaborative individual to join our team as Director, New York. The Director, New York is a critical, cross-departmental role, responsible for leading a range of significant functions of the business, including acting as the senior staff member at the Gallery’s New York location; coordinating and managing all aspects of the location’s renovation, daily operations, installations, and openings; as well as conducting sales and engaging proactively with clients worldwide. The Director, New York is a core member of the gallery’s Executive Team, advising on business growth strategy; gallery culture; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives. This position is a full-time, salaried role, Tuesday – Saturday, and will require flexibility for additional hours based on the needs of the gallery. A generous benefits package is offered.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations:

  • Temporary: Oversee and coordinate the renovation of a New York gallery location, working with architects, contractors, and other reputable vendors to realize the Owner’s vision for the space within a set budget

  • Recruit, hire, and develop a New York team, including full-time and part-time employees

  • Oversee the daily operations of the New York location

  • Ensure and maintain consistency across gallery locations, including aesthetics, engagement, and culture

Sales:

  • Meet and exceed quarterly sales goals (prorated for operations needs)

  • Create and maintain relationships with artists, collectors, consultants, curators, and other art world contacts

  • Develop and retain and in-depth knowledge of the gallery artists’ practices and biographies

  • Inform clients of upcoming exhibitions and fair presentations, providing supporting offer materials as needed

  • Communicate consistently and proactively with the sales team to review offers, sales, museum acquisitions, and other opportunities

  • Research, monitor, and secure secondary market sales opportunities

Fairs, Travel, & Outreach:

  • Cultivate a presence for the gallery externally and support gallery artists by attending gallery and museum openings, art fairs, dinners, and other events

  • Assist in art fair installation or de-installation as needed

  • Travel to the West Coast regularly to attend openings, engage with staff, and meet with clients and artists

Exhibitions & Artist Relations:

  • Direct all logistics on-site in New York for exhibition installation, de-installation, and production, liaising with the West Coast-based Exhibitions team as needed

  • Propose gallery programming opportunities

  • Strategize solo and group museum exhibitions for gallery artists

  • Develop and maintain close and supportive individual relationships with gallery artists

People & Business Management:

  • Regularly oversee the performance, growth, and goals of all members of the New York team and maintain supportive relationships with all members of the sales team on the West Coast

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of Gallery standards, culture, expectations, processes, and protocol, leading by example

  • Develop and regularly evaluate best practices for clear, consistent, and collaborative communication between staff across multiple time zones

  • Work with Executive team to develop strategic plans for the gallery, including implementation of policies that support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Our ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented and creative with exceptional organizational skills; an excellent verbal and written communicator; and possesses the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. We seek candidates who are extremely self-motivated, responsible, and efficient, and who hold a sincere appreciation for and experience with navigating diverse cultural spaces. In addition:

  • Knowledge of contemporary art required

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working as a sales director at a contemporary art gallery preferred

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a people manager preferred

  • Related experience in a senior role at a contemporary art gallery, auction house, contemporary art museum, and/or artist studio will be considered

  • Familiarity with workplace diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives preferred

  • MA in Modern or Contemporary Art History or related field preferred, but consideration is given to candidates with a BA and/or related experience

  • Skills in a Mac-based environment required, including: Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Sheets), Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and video / phone conferencing platforms

  • Skills in the Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign) preferred

  • Intermediate knowledge of databases such as ArtBase / FileMaker (or similar) preferred

  • Intermediate knowledge of sales tools such as Arternal, ArtBinder, and/or Artsy preferred

  • Fluent in English, fluency in an additional language welcomed

  • Preference is given to candidates with expert knowledge of global contemporary art, including art of the African Diaspora, Latin America, and Asia

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • This is a full-time salaried position

  • The pay scale for this position will be shared at the time of an initial phone interview.

  • As a sales-based position, this role is eligible for quarterly sales bonuses.
