Oliver Scholars prepares high-achieving Black and Latino students from underserved New York City communities for success at top independent schools and prestigious colleges. We provide crucial support for our Scholars so they can realize their full potential and ultimately give back to the city, the nation, and the world.
The Dedalus Foundation was founded in 1981 by the artist Robert Motherwell to support public understanding and appreciation of the principles of modern art and modernism. The Dedalus Foundation follows Robert Motherwell’s belief that exposure to the arts greatly benefits individuals of all ages (www.dedalusfoundation.org).
The Modern Art History Instructor will be reporting to the Chief Program and Equity Officer, and will plan classroom curriculum with support from Dedalus Foundation staff. The primary objective of the Modern Art History Instructor is to assist in preparing rising 9th grade students to succeed at independent schools. Students should gain improved competency in the subject matter and skills taught.
Responsibilities
Design a 9th grade -level elective course to be taught on weekends between April 30-June 15;
Teach one section of modern art history and art-making;
Coordinate 4 museum/gallery class outings integrated into the curriculum;
Collaborate with Oliver administrators to outline expected curricular outcomes
Requirements
A BA in art history or related field from an accredited college; advanced degree preferred
Two or more years of teaching experience;
Two or more years of experience designing curriculum;
Strong content knowledge of art history and careers in the arts; knowledge of the AP Art History curriculum a plus;
Comfort facilitating exploration-based, art-making experiences with middle school students;
Demonstrated success facilitating a creative learning environment for middle school students;
Strong oral and written communication skills;
Ability to show initiative, creativity, and flexibility in a team-oriented environment;
A mission-driven individual with a belief in and commitment to Oliver’s mission and values;
Commitment to serving communities traditionally underrepresented within the arts community, especially QTPOC youth;
A good listener and comfortable receiving feedback;
Emotionally mature with a good sense of humor and the flexibility and sensitivity to work with diverse situations and audiences, including students and families.
