The Deputy Director will focus primarily on both development and fundraising, while ensuring artistic excellence in the innovation, experimentation, and execution of National Sawdust’s mission-based work and programming.

The Deputy Director will report to the Managing and Artistic Director. National Sawdust seeks candidates who will:

  • Be a willing, talented, and strategic fundraiser — successfully building and maintaining long-term individual and institutional relationships while working with the existing National Sawdust development team and its objectives for board, corporate, foundation, individual, and gala donation efforts

  • Continue the groundbreaking leadership in contemporary musical experimentation and culture for which National Sawdust is known

  • Communicate and build upon existing programming and partnerships

  • Inspire community and patrons with ideas and powerful interpersonal skills; be a leader who can energize, collaborate, mentor, and delegate amongst staff and artists

  • Promote National Sawdust’s institutional identity as a can’t-miss destination for artistic innovation; enhance overall visibility regionally, nationally, and internationally

  • Expand and help communicate and strategize the activity of National Sawdust beyond the walls of its physical footprint

  • Establish a transparent, proactive, and collaborative workplace that includes open communication across the organization

  • Be an integral part of leadership as a part of the team’s senior staff; provide clear direction to empower staff and partners for specific and collective performance

  • Collaborate with development, communications, and artistic departments for the betterment of National Sawdust

  • Ensure and promote a diverse and inclusive National Sawdust in programming, outreach, staffing, and culture.

Responsibilities
  • Flexible work schedule to meet the requirements of the role, particularly in fundraising

  • Financial and commercial acumen, with an ability to operate programs and projects on time and on-budget in service of National Sawdust’s commitment to financial health and sustainability

  • Skilled in overall institutional budgeting and reporting

Requirements
  • Agile and experienced people manager, committed to getting the best out of a team, while also committed to doing work himself/herself

  • Credibility and extensive experience in the field, with personal and professional networks to support both

  • Deeply committed to the multidisciplinary nature of National Sawdust

  • An innovator, with a vision for the future of creative expression and how to realize it

  • Accessible and collaborative, generous of spirit, outgoing, organized, hard- working, humorous, and one who enjoys the social demands of an externally and internally oriented senior management role

  • Strong organizational skills, effective under pressure, ability to manage

competing demands and remain focused while multitasking

  • Skilled in diverse technology environments—e.g. Salesforce, G Suite

COMPENSATION:

Salary commensurate with experience, with competitive benefits and vacation package
