Organization Overview

The Mattress Factory was founded in 1977 by artists to support artists as they work in residence to create and exhibit site-specific installations. Since then, the museum has supported and exhibited new work by more than 750 artists from the Pittsburgh region and around the world. The museum’s mission is to 1) provide artists with an integrated residency and exhibition program, 2) educate and provide access so that everyone can appreciate the multi-disciplinary creative process of today’s artists, and 3) energize its urban community through artistic and education programs.

Job Overview

The Mattress Factory is seeking an Exhibitions Manager who is organized, committed to the museum’s Artist Residency program and its artists, experienced, and an excellent problem solver. In conjunction with the curator, the Exhibitions Manager is responsible for managing key elements of the Artist Residency program, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, resourcing and materials delivery; exhibition installation; and related services and operations. The Manager will provide the utmost support for artists to realize their projects, including serving as a liaison with other museum departments and managing teams during installation. Additionally, the Manager will work with the Archivist and Facilities Manager to coordinate maintenance of the museum’s permanent collection.

  • Plan, schedule and manage installation, maintenance, and de-installation of exhibitions;

  • Manage logistics of the artist’s residency at the museum, including schedule, travel and accommodations, budget, and materials;

  • Oversee technical production/realization of complex art works and installations, including coordinating and managing construction and AV/technical needs;

  • Coordinate and communicate with artists;

  • Coordinate and manage installations team, including one full-time Exhibitions Technician, temporary installers, and external contractors;

  • Source design, construction and install information;

  • Manage department budget and material costs;

  • Coordinate with other museum departments, including Education, Development, and Marketing, on relevant elements including programming, exhibitions fundraising and media, and visitor experience;

  • Coordinate with Facilities Manager regarding exhibitions and building maintenance;

  • Coordinate with the Archivist to ensure exhibitions documentation and management of online archives;

  • Maintain floor plans, maps and other informational material needed for artist planning; and

  • Assist with installations for major museum events or fundraisers, including art auctions and Urban Garden Party.

  • M.F.A. or M.A. in a related field, or comparable experience;

  • Four to six years of experience with the following:

o Managing exhibitions at an art museum, gallery or similar cultural institution,

o Oversight and implementation of large scale exhibitions,

o Planning, layout and budgeting for artistic programming, and

o Collaboration with artists, curators, directors, and other institution departments;

  • Experience with a broad array of techniques relating to art fabrication, tool usage, safety protocols, and construction and/or familiarity with relevant practices;

  • Excellent organizational, management, and verbal and written communication skills;

  • Committed advocacy for artists and freedom of artistic expression, and passion and ability to converse with artists on behalf of the Mattress Factory;

  • Competency in art shipping, handling and coordination with other institutions, galleries, artists and third parties;

  • Ability to effectively communicate with architects and contractors on all aspects relating to exhibitions or project maintenance and development;

  • Flexibility and ability to work long hours during install and de-install periods;

  • Skilled willingness to work with other museum departments on elements including programming; marketing; exhibitions-related development, including grants application and reporting; and visitor experience;

  • Ability to quickly and accurately assess priorities, take initiative and problem solve, and balance multiple projects in a fast-paced, changing environment;

  • Competence with design and layout management of multiple galleries, including familiarity with design, mapping, models, and drafting;

  • Experience with computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign, SketchUP/CAD/Rhino, and audio DAW such as Reaper or Logic;

  • Current US Driver’s License; and

  • Ability to lift a minimum 50 pounds.
