Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco is now seeking to hire Gallery Attendants ($20/hr) for the run of our program “Meantime”, January 18, 2022 - April 30th, 2022. Applicants should have flexibility with scheduling; occasionally hours are needed outside of traditional working hours. The Gallery Attendant position requires a welcoming demeanor, attention to detail and finesse when balancing guest needs and general museum policies. You will work closely with the Curatorial and Programming Associate, Chief of Staff, and other Gallery Attendants to maintain a welcoming and streamlined museum experience.

About the ICA San Francisco:

The Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF) is a non-collecting contemporary art museum, civic social space, and center for artistic experimentation, boundary pushing, and change-making in the San Francisco Bay Area. Admission is Free.

The ability to take risks, respond to the critical issues happening locally and globally, and evolve in order to remain relevant to the surrounding community is part of the museum’s founding DNA. There is a critical need for arts institutions committed to supporting the vision of diverse artists’ voices and engaging and educating the broadest possible cross section of audiences about the power of Contemporary Art. Offering artists at various stages of their career their first institutional show, or their first major institutional project on the West Coast, the ICA will provide a platform for changing the nature of the artistic canon and will foster visibility and critical examination for artists that reflect the diverse population of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. The ICA is committed to being a collaborative force for the success of the Bay Area arts ecosystem and offering engagement with critically significant contemporary art practice for free.

Responsibilities
  • Proactively greets visitors upon entry, monitors the galleries to guarantee the safety and security of artwork and visitors

  • Provides visitors with a positive museum experience by answering questions about exhibitions, the museum, events, and membership opportunities

  • Ensures patron safety by administering emergency procedures when necessary; assists with emergency response situations according to museum policies

  • Promptly reports violations of museum policies, accident reports, and hazardous conditions to supervisor

  • Completes Opening and Closing of ICA SF galleries including daily inspection of art and facilities, the monitoring of gallery electronics/interactive materials, maintaining supplies in reception area; promptly reports concerns to supervisor

  • Handles sales and restocking of ICA SF merch on an as needed basis

  • Complete disinfection rounds upon opening and closing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19

  • Assists with set-up and breaking down event equipment, including but not limited to AV equipment, chairs, tables etc, and other general facilities responsibilities

  • Assist in additional program support and crowd management during events and programs

  • Assists with gallery and visitor evaluations as requested

  • Attends security and emergency procedure trainings as necessary

Requirements

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

  • Willingness to learn museum policies and calmly respond to emergency procedures

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds

  • Standing on concrete floors for long periods of time

  • Walking on concrete floors

  • Pushing, pulling, bending at the waist

Job Specifications

This role will be fully on-site at ICA SF (901 Minnesota St.) This role may require work outside of traditional working hours, as well as weekends to accommodate programs and events.
