Night Gallery

Night Gallery seeks an enthusiastic and self motivated candidate for the full-time position of Head Preparator to begin immediately. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to travel and join an ever-growing gallery.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities:

  • Safely pack artwork in inventory (slipcases, collars, custom boxes, crates, etc.)

  • Keep accurate account of artwork locations in gallery database

  • Pack and prepare sold artworks for various shipping needs

  • Move work between onsite and local storage

  • Locate, install/ deinstall work in viewing rooms for client visits

  • Assist local artists with projects when appropriate

  • General upkeep of gallery and property when needed (painting, organization, etc.)

Exhibition responsibilities:

  • Organize, pack, and transport artwork from local artists

  • Assist in deinstallation, packing, storage, and transport of previous exhibition

  • Assist in hanging shows, including installation of artwork in viewing rooms and office

  • Patching and painting of walls

  • Exhibition lighting

  • Assist in set up and take down of events, private openings, and dinners

Art fairs responsibilities:

  • Pack artwork and assist in preparing shipments to art fairs

  • Prepare tool and supply kit needed for fair installation

  • Travel to art fairs and take care of necessary travel tasks when needed

  • Fair booth installation and art storage management

  • Ability to work in the booth for the duration of the fair, and run requisite errands as needed

  • Deinstall and pack artworks at close of fair, communicating with shippers when needed

Requirements

Candidate must have 3 years of experience art handling in a commercial or institutional setting. Proficiency with Mac computers and common office software such as Microsoft, Google Apps, Acrobat Pro, Photoshop and a knowledge of basic power tools is required. Familiarity with Gallery Manager is a plus. Candidate must possess a CA driver’s license and have reliable transportation.

An ideal candidate for the position will have excellent problem solving and communication skills, be organized with a capacity to prioritize on a daily basis and the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects in a demanding, fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is thoughtful, adaptable, highly organized, detail-oriented, able to receive constructive criticism, and self-motivated. Candidates must have the ability to safely lift and handle at least 50 pounds as part of daily activities and be willing to occasionally outside work of typical business hours when needed.
