The Contemporary Austin is hiring a full time Head Preparator to support the Exhibitions Department with all areas of the installation and construction of museum galleries and outdoor exhibitions. This position requires 40 hours a week and may require additional hours during installation periods that occur approximately 8–12 weeks per year.
Working in conjunction with the Director of Exhibition Production, the Head Preparator works with artists and other museum staff to install and de-install exhibitions at museum locations including the Jones Center on Congress Avenue, the Betty and Edward Marcus sculpture park at Laguna Gloria, and various public sites, as well as hires/supervises a team of workers during exhibition turnovers.
Salary: $24.00 - $25.00 (Hourly Wage)
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Cleaning and maintenance of indoor exhibitions, outdoor sculptures, and their environments
Assist in fabrication and installation of new artworks for artists and the museum
Conduct regular exhibition checks for damage, security, and lighting
Draft Sketch-Up models of exhibition spaces as needed
Follow installation schedule and assist in coordinating exhibitions needs with other museum departments
Pack and transport art in coordination with Registrar and lenders
Assist with crate building for works of art, construction of pedestals and other gallery furniture
Meet regularly with the larger exhibition team to develop a cohesive plan for upcoming projects
The Head Preparator is flexible and comfortable working in a fast-paced, changing environment. The successful candidate will have 2+ years experience in museum/gallery art handling as well as experience in basic carpentry, painting, construction, and use of power tools. The individual will also have prior experience working directly with artists and following direction, and will have good communication, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
2+ years’ experience in museum/gallery art handing
Valid driver’s license with clear driving record required
Experience in installation, exhibition coordination preferred
Experience with Microsoft Office, Sketch-Up, Photoshop
Able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds
Able to travel between job sites as needed
Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time year-round
Able to drive 16’ – 26’ box truck
