The Conservation Center

The Conservation Center in Chicago is soliciting qualified applicants to join the Company’s Shipping and Transportation Department as a full-time Lead Art Handler. This department provides professional art handling and installation, collection management and storage, packing, and shipping of art and antiques for corporations, institutions, and private clients.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for taking the lead on day-to-day assignments when out in the field.

  • Responsible for art handling, crating, and storage within a warehouse environment.

  • Work closely with registrars, conservators, and sales team during the scheduling, intake, and return of artworks.

  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

Requirements
  • Background in an art-related field required

  • 4+ years of preparator, art handling, and art installation experience in a museum, gallery, or similar setting required (when applying, please include at least one reference who can speak to your experience in the field).

  • Experience driving a 24-foot box truck (no CDL required) and negotiating busy loading docks.

  • Must have a willingness to learn some art conservation terminology and gain a basic understanding of conservation practices to be able to work collaboratively with conservation staff.

  • The position is client-facing; therefore, some previous customer service experience is necessary. Candidates must have a professional demeanor and discretion in handling accounts.

  • Must be comfortable in a rapidly moving warehouse environment with the ability to lift 50+ lbs.

  • Must be comfortable working onsite to pack or install artworks.

  • Must be comfortable working in art disaster response situations where sites include structures that have suffered fires, floods, and other natural disasters. The resulting environments, while controlled, may have varying degrees of standing water, mold, soot, etc.

  • Ability to travel on short notice for disaster response, including weekend and overnight hours.

  • Must be flexible and have the willingness to adapt to project-specific needs on a case-by-case basis.
