About the Position

The Museum of Craft and Design is now seeking to hire one part-time Store Associate/Gallery Ambassador for the following schedule: Thursday through Saturday, 9:45 AM to 5:15 PM, Sunday from 11:45 AM to 5:15 PM. Applicants should have flexibility with scheduling: occasionally hours are needed outside of this schedule.

The Store Associate/Gallery Ambassador position requires a warm and welcoming demeanor, attention to detail and finesse when balancing guest needs and general museum protocols. You will work closely with the Store Manager, Operations and Administrative Manager, and other Store Associates and Gallery Ambassadors to maintain a welcoming and streamlined museum experience.

Responsibilities

Store Associate Responsibilities

  • Complete opening and closing procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Greet and assist visitors with a courteous demeanor, assist in purchasing admission, merchandise, membership, and event tickets.

  • Answer the front desk telephone and guide guest inquiries to the appropriate solution.

  • Actively approach and advise customers on product purchases to increase sales.

  • Effectively communicate information on merchandise, exhibitions, programs and the neighborhood.

  • Complete financial transactions including sales, returns, credits and discounts.

  • Cleanly wrap and package gifts (year round).

  • Tag merchandise, create new product displays, restock as needed, maintain storage/office area and store cleanliness.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Gallery Ambassador Responsibilities

  • Complete opening and closing procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Monitor entry, parklet, and museum spaces for cleanliness and safety.

  • Ensure guests are following all museum safety guidelines and rules.

  • Proactively monitor gallery spaces for safety and note the conditions of artwork and facility, reporting to Operations and Administrative Manager when necessary.

  • Actively safeguard artwork from damage, theft, and vandalism.

  • Provide guests a positive experience: answer questions about the museum, exhibitions, events, programs, and membership.

  • Reports all suspicious conditions or activity to supervisors and other Gallery Ambassadors immediately.

  • Maintain museum sanitation and supplies throughout the day.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Minimum of an AA degree or coursework in business, design, art practice, or art history, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Retail experience in an art or design oriented environment or high end specialty store.

  • Demonstrated experience and interest in the arts. Previous gallery or museum experience is a plus.

  • Excellent salesmanship.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated trustworthiness, punctuality, and dependability; ability to work a flexible schedule.

  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in a team environment.

  • Initiative in identifying areas for improvement.

  • Previous experience in processing sales, working with a cash register and computer inventory system; basic understanding of retail inventory and accounting.

  • Knowledge of Altru database and Mac systems are a plus.

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.

  • Remain alert and vigilant for extended periods of time.

  • Prior experience in a gallery or museum security role is a plus.
