As the Museum of Craft and Design continues to build its museum store presence in the community and online, the Museum Store Manager is an exciting opportunity to continue the momentum for MCD’s award-winning store.

The Museum Store Manager is responsible for working onsite every day to oversee all the daily operations of the Museum Store, and to manage the store with attention to maximizing profitability while furthering the Museum’s mission. The Museum Store Manager’s responsibilities include budgeting, managing store staff and scheduling, merchandising the museum store and website regularly, developing expertise in Altru, MCD’s database and POS, organizing inventory, and making sales. The Museum Store Manager will work closely with MCD’s Executive Director to select work for consignment, make inventory purchases, and increase sales, as well as managing ongoing relationships with vendors and artists/designers. Manager will ensure that all available merchandise is accurately represented in MCD’s web store, facilitate shipping, and help the marketing team choose items for promotional e-blasts. As an important ambassador for MCD, they will supervise front of house store staff to ensure a positive visitor experience and encourage new MCD memberships.

This position’s salary range is between $60,000 and $64,000 per year with paid health benefits.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work on site Tuesday through Saturday, ensuring that Sunday hours are covered

  • Develop annual store budget, meet budget goals consistently and produce reports for the E.D. and Board

  • Oversee daily and monthly reconciliation of store and ticket transactions and manage cash

  • Manage customer service practices and develop guidelines

  • Implement inventory control standards and best practices, including completing the store’s annual inventory

  • Ensure adherence to policies and procedures related to Museum Store retail operations and admission desk operations

  • Recruit, manage, train, and supervise museum store staff

  • Research unique merchandise to ensure a fresh mix of contemporary craft and design at a variety of price points that reflect the Museum’s mission, exhibitions, and experiences

  • Collaborate on the potential development of custom branded products that reflect MCD’s identity and contribute to increasing MCD’s visibility

  • Regularly merchandise and refresh the store to ensure the best product placement and visual appeal for museum patrons

  • Manage special retail events throughout the year to increase earned revenue and to raise MCD’s visibility in the community

  • Pack and ship orders using best practices

  • Assist with visitor and revenue-producing areas of MCD, i.e. special events

  • Regularly maintain and update merchandise availability on MCD website

  • Encourage membership sales with store visitors

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Requirements

Knowledge:

  • Customer sales and service practices including: courteous interaction with visitors and clients; responsible decision-making with customer-related concerns; creating a welcoming environment

  • Retail store management and visual merchandising

  • Computer operation and ability to use Altru POS software and Excel

  • Highly developed sense of design and strong knowledge of contemporary craft

Skills:

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Proven track record in strong retail sales

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and writing

  • Experience with POS system and data management required

  • Strong knowledge of retail procedures and operations

Abilities:

  • Ability to manage day-to-day activities while focusing on long-term events and planning

  • Ability to maintain retail records associated with inventory, personnel, and sales data to include time sheets, leave, receipts and purchase orders, to prepare reports and monitor budget

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Minimum 3 years experience managing a museum store or comparable art-focused retail store

  • Art-focused purchasing inventory, shipping, customer sales and service, and budgeting

  • Experience managing and supervising staff in day-to-day operations

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; sit for long periods of time; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
