The New York Academy of Art seeks a Preparator that supports daily operations of its Exhibitions Department. The position is part-time permanent and requires 3 days per week (to occur sometime during the hours Monday through Friday, 10am-6pm). The ideal candidate will have some flexibility in their schedule, as the workload will increase between exhibitions. Occasional weekend and overtime work may be necessary. There also might be travel for art fairs. This position reports to the Director of Exhibitions.

Responsibilities
  • Frontline participation at Academy exhibitions and our three annual fundraising events (Tribeca Ball, Artists for Artists, and Deck the Walls)

  • Install and de-install exhibitions in-house or at offsite locations, often troubleshooting and utilizing critical thinking to solution scope changes

  • Conduct incoming and outgoing condition reports for artwork

  • Hang/install artwork

  • Install wall labels and signage (i.e. artwork labels, foam core signs, wall or window vinyls)

  • Light artwork in exhibitions

  • Patch and paint exhibition walls

  • Pack artworks for local, national, and international transportation and storage

  • Construct new and/or repair existing pedestals for exhibitions

  • Support the Frame Shop leading up to the Academy’s annual fall benefit auction Artists for Artists

  • Assist with transportation and set up with occasional Academy Drawing Parties (i.e. the annual Will Cotton Drawing Party)

  • Assist with overseeing inventory of packaging supplies and art handling supplies for all Academy Exhibitions endeavors and help maintain cleanliness and organization of supplies

  • Help maintain organization of on-site and off-site storage of artworks

Requirements
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in a similar role (art install, packaging, shipping) working for a gallery, museum or similar arts institution

  • Knowledge in framing is preferred, but not mandatory

  • Must be able to lift 70lbs

  • Valid driver’s license; CDL license a bonus

  • Experience driving a Box Truck

  • Must be ok with heights (ladder or scissor lift)

  • Familiarity with the use of power tools, hand trucks, pallet jacks, dollies and other necessary warehouse equipment

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams

  • Adaptable and able to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment

  • Efficient problem solving and time management abilities
