An established artist studio in South Central Los Angeles seeks an experienced draftsperson (skilled in drawing and engraving) to join a growing team in the role of Studio Assistant. This is a temporary, project-based position for a 3-4 month term, with the possibility of growth and additional work following the completion of the project.


Through the creation of sculpture, collage, and installation, and with a spirit of collaboration and mutual support, this multi-faceted artist addresses the challenges faced by people of color and queer communities in South Central Los Angeles. Their studio is non-hierarchical, inspired by one person’s artistic vision, but driven and formed by the hands, minds, and hearts of many.

With deep ties to their neighborhood—and inextricable from their artistic practice and studio—is the artist’s community center. This space is imbued with the spirit of independence and is founded on an ethos of empowerment through self-directed action. The center is a site of support and sustainability, a hub where Black and Brown liberation and self-direction is championed and celebrated.


  • The pay scale for this position is $25 – $35/hour, commensurate with experience

  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 10am – 6pm

  • Full-time preferred, although part-time availability considered

  • Temporary: mid-August through mid-December 2021(with possibility to extend)

  • Multiple candidates will be hired for this position


  • The essential duties of this position are fully in-person in an active studio

  • Wearing a mask, securing a COVID-19 vaccination, and/or other COVID-19 safety protocols may be required

  • Measure cut panels for scale accuracy before carving

  • Utilizing artists’ drawings that have been transferred to a carving surface, engrave linework onto and into the panel precisely and accurately

  • Employ variation in depth, linework, and patterning, as instructed by the artist

  • Safely clean, dry, wrap, and pack panels for transport

  • Possibility of additional studio tasks, as needed

  • Temporary, project-based position for a 3-4 month term


The ideal candidate should be patient, meticulous, flexible, creative, and adaptable; experienced in drawing and carving. They should enjoy problem solving and collaboration. In addition—

  • Minimum of four (4) years experience in line drawing and carving preferred

  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience as a studio assistant preferred

  • Experience as a practicing artist welcomed, particularly those candidates who make drawings in graphite or pen and printmakers familiar with engravings and woodcuts

  • Demonstrated experience in drafting and carving using detailed line work (note portfolio request below)

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with drawing and carving materials, tools, and finishes

  • Ability to have very careful hand, following lines precisely and accurately

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while completing tasks accurately

  • Thorough and precise in following direction in order to accomplish desired outcome
