Pennsylvania College of Art & Design is seeking a full-time faculty member to join the Illustration department. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide professional level teaching and instruction to prepare students for a successful career in Illustration. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in narrative and conceptual visual storytelling, traditional and digital mediums, and business practices.
The Illustration department offers a competitive program that teaches industry standard techniques with an emphasis on narrative and conceptual visual storytelling. The department requires an applicant with passion and energy who is dedicated to creative practice and invites engagement with community. The ideal applicant should have professional industry experience and expertise in both traditional and digital media. The candidate will be expected to teach 18 contact hours a semester that may require both introductory and experienced levels in:
Conceptual thinking
Visual storytelling
Traditional and digital methods (drawing, painting and design)
Business techniques
Current marketing & self-promotion strategies
Knowledge of the history of Illustration and the current markets and trends in the industry
Responsibilities:
Provide professional level teaching and instruction.
Evaluate and assess student work and provide feedback on a general and individual basis.
Respond to student emails and meet with students individually as needed.
Provide required Assessment documentation for each course taught.
Design/revise course content as needed.
Attend department meetings, critiques, and/or events.
Assume additional departmental responsibilities a needed.
Maintain active participation in the profession and stay current with industry standards, technological advancements, etc.
Additional responsibilities include advising students, participating in student reviews, collaborating with other college departments and community partners, providing assistance in curriculum planning and event coordination, and serving on college committees.
Additional experiences preferred but not required:
Experience in the art licensing industry
Digital 3D modeling using Zbrush or similar 3D modeling program
Experience in kinetic illustration or basic animations
Skills & Qualifications:
A minimum of 5 years as a working professional in publishing, licensing, visual development, or related field of Illustration
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
College-level teaching experience preferred
Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite
Expertise in both traditional and digital mediums
Outstanding communication and effective motivation skills gauged to a diverse group of students, colleagues, and community members
Active industry presence and affiliation and participation in relevant professional organizations
A team player committed to building and maintaining a professional environment for peers and students
Ability to connect the illustration program to the professional illustration community
Desire to work collaboratively towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.
