Reporting to the Head of Imaging, Intellectual Property, and Publications, the Copyeditor is responsible for the editing and proofreading of all programmatic text produced for publication in any form and other Museum materials as needed. The Copyeditor edits publication projects that originate in the Art and Program division and those that involve the contributions of authors contractually bound to write for the museum. All activities of the Copyeditor are guided by the mission of the Walters Art Museum.

Responsibilities

The Copyeditor ensures the stylistic consistency of Museum publications by

  • Editing and proofreading essays and text produced for books, catalogs, collection guides, Journal, and other similar works produced by the Walters, and managing the external peer review process, where applicable.

  • Editing and proofreading interpretive text written for inclusion in gallery displays, whether exhibitions or collection installations.

  • Editing and proofreading text produced for collections-based digital content.

  • Editing agendas and information presented to the Board of Trustees.

  • Editing and proofreading content included in the members’ magazine, annual report, and other ephemera.

  • Identifying and outlining a style model and any deviation from it in a style sheet.

  • Coordinating with Marketing and Communications to ensure appropriate consistency in written materials.

  • In concert with the Deputy Director for Art and Program and the Head of -Publications, Imaging, and Intellectual Property, the Copyeditor participates in the publications program by:

  • In collaboration with DDAP, HPIIP, Imaging and Rights Coordinator, and Curator (where applicable), determining and implementing the illustration program for each project.

  • Drafting and editing, captions, copyright materials, flap, and promotional copy, forewords, and marketing material for new publications.

Requirements

Education

  • Minimum requirement: BA. Area of Concentration Humanities, Art History or History preferred

Experience

  • 2+ years of experience as a Copyeditor required.

  • Demonstrated experience and success working with a variety of non-fiction texts related to the visual arts required.

  • Copyediting certificate preferred.​​​​​​​

  • Awareness of current best practices in the field of art catalog production.

  • Knowledge of standard practices related to peer-review processes.

  • Familiarity with print and digital publication practices.

  • Basic knowledge of the history of art preferred.

Skills

  • Highly developed copyediting and proofreading skills.

  • Strong organization and time management skills.

  • Must be a team player, self-motivated, attentive to detail, able to prioritize and manage multiple projects and work independently.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work well with individuals at all levels internally and externally.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Google Docs
