Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is an internationally recognized presenter of contemporary performing arts and cinema. We are seeking an Head Carpenter to be part of our house crew to handle the planning and execution of all BAM presentations, productions, rentals and special events.

The Head Carpenter is a hands-on position that requires leading crews and executing plans, often times from foreign companies. The bulk of the responsibility for the Head Carpenter is to lead crews during load in, set up, run and strike performances and events on a weekly basis. In addition, the position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all carpentry and rigging equipment and systems. BAM’s Opera House stagehands are represented by IATSE Local 4.

The successful Head Carpenter candidate will be a strong leader that is able to work as a member of a large team. The Head Carpenter position requires an exemplary work ethic and extensive theatrical experience in carpentry and rigging both for presented and produced works. The Head Carpenter position requires excellent communication in order to work successfully with other members of the crew, Production staff and visiting companies.

Brooklyn Academy of Music is currently undergoing an anti-oppression process; BAM recognizes that historic institutional practices lead to a non-inclusive environment, and is working to address diversity inclusion in all forms. The Production department supports and continues to take part in this process.

This position’s contracted work begins September 3, 2019, though there will be work on BAM’s campus in August.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with all stagehands, departments and production management to work with first class artists and companies to present cutting-edge, internationally renowned performances and art.

Responsible for performing and supervising carpentry and rigging operation, installation and maintenance in the Opera House as a working member of the crew.

Lead, assign and supervise carpentry and rigging crews performing diverse tasks while simultaneously performing his/her own work assignments.

Load in, set up, assemble, alter, and strike any scenery in the BAM Opera House.

Identify crewing needs for productions and events in conjunction with BAM Production Staff and the Crew Chief. Evaluate potential crew qualifications and ensuring they are qualified and match their competencies to position requirements.

Enforce standards of operation in carpentry and rigging that are safe for both personnel and equipment.

Collaborate with BAM and Visiting Company Production Staff with advance planning for a show or event by interpreting ground plans and technical drawings.

Create all necessary paperwork based on above information including rental lists, equipment purchases, running lists and expendables.

Represent the Carpentry Department in production meetings.

Perform carpentry and rigging maintenance throughout the BAM Opera House.

Requirements

10 years’ experience in carpentry and rigging stage work

Advanced knowledge of theatrical and scenic carpentry, including the ability to interpret and read technical drawings and designs, and to create and execute the plan to install, operate, maintain and strike said scenery

Advanced knowledge of theatrical and arena rigging, including the ability to troubleshoot and operate show motors, hoists, show motion control and other equipment

ETCP Entertainment Theater and Arena Rigging Certification within 364 days of hire date. This certification must be kept up-to-date.

Work will require standing for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying and will occasionally require pushing heavy weights or lifting and carrying weights up to 50 pounds.

High school diploma or GED. Bachelor’s Degree desirable. Possess a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical skills like percentages, ratios, etc. Must have basic computer knowledge including e-mail & web search ability.

Union Affiliation: If not currently a member, the successful candidate will be required to join IATSE Local 4.
