The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking an experienced conservation professional; a strategic thinker and expert communicator with advanced leadership skills for the position of Assistant Chief Conservator.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Chief Conservator oversees the operations of three conservation departments: Sculpture and Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Paper. In conjunction with the Chief Conservator/Senior Deputy Director for Conservation and Collection, this role provides leadership for the Susan and David Goode Center for Advanced Study in Art Conservation and works to enhance its reputation both nationally and internationally.

In addition to the management and oversight of the museum’s conservation program, the Assistant Chief Conservator will also articulate conservation and collection care priorities; develop policies and procedures on preservation issues; encourage greater diversity within the conservation profession; draft grant proposals to secure funding for special projects and ongoing support; perform conservation treatments and carry out research in their respective area of conservation specialization; and engage the public to increase better understanding about conservation practices and principles.

The Assistant Chief Conservator will develop productive and pragmatic professional working relationships with staff across the museum.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Art Conservation or related field or equivalent applicable experience or training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of art conservation methods and materials; proven supervisory, planning, organization, and project management skills; capacity to prioritize and deal with many projects and assignments simultaneously; ability to analyze and make recommendations and decisions based upon a sophisticated understanding of art museum practices; and extensive experience at levels of increasing responsibility in positions related to the management of a multidisciplinary conservation program.
