The Associate Curator is responsible for working with the Museum’s permanent collection and its development, managing and curating exhibitions and installations, and supporting the Museum’s teaching mission. The Associate Curator reports to the Museum’s Director and works closely and collaboratively with the Associate Curator of Visual and Material Culture, the Curator of Education and Academic Programs, the Associate Curator of Education, and Collections management staff.
The Museum’s curatorial team represents a unique model in which collection curators and education curators work together in the planning of installations and exhibitions. Exhibitions and collection displays are conceived and considered by this team and the Director, in relation to the Museum’s Teaching with Art program, with ideal projects being those that support the institution’s commitment to experiential and interdisciplinary learning.
manage the Museum’s exhibition program and budgets by planning and executing special exhibitions and installations and overseeing the production of exhibition-related materials
lead exhibition meetings and develop related agendas
maintain long-term exhibition schedule and establish installation schedules with Collections staff
curate special exhibitions and permanent collection installations
occasionally manage and facilitate special exhibitions for outside curators (faculty, guest curators, etc.)
manage exhibition budgets in coordination with Director and Financial Coordinator
contribute to grant applications for special exhibitions and track related funding
manage exhibition publication projects (including catalogues, brochures, etc.)
handle logistics for Museum signage, exhibition vinyl, banners and other displays in the galleries, lobby, and building exterior
write exhibition press releases
establish communications and marketing plans for special exhibitions, including media, outreach strategies and advertising (in collaboration with Director)
respond to outside inquiries proposing exhibitions at MHCAM
research and follow trends in exhibition display and curatorial practice
assist with the development and oversight of the Museum’s collection of over 24,000 objects, including acquisitions, scholarly research and writing, cataloging, display, and care
research permanent collection and assist with ongoing improvements to Mimsy collections database and object file cataloging
propose new acquisitions in support of teaching mission and collection development
respond to collection-related inquiries from researchers and visitors (with assistance from Art Museum Advisory Board Fellow and curatorial interns)
collaborate with Collections Manager to facilitate outgoing loan requests
visit donors/potential donors to assess possible gifts
work with other curators, Collections Manager, and Senior Museum Preparator to identify works of art needing conservation treatment, frames, mounts and housings
serve as staff co-liaison to the Collections Committee of the Art Museum Advisory Board by working with committee leadership to develop agendas, create reports, maintain records, and
provide information and support as needed
Other duties
oversee the Museum’s communications and marketing activities, ensuring the general consistency and quality of messaging, signage, and promotional materials
prepare for and participate in staff and Art Museum Advisory Board meetings and special events
occasionally present gallery talks and lead tours for alumnae and community groups
write exhibition and permanent collection labels
supervise and mentor curatorial interns
attend and participate in scholarly conferences and evolve as a curator and scholar of art history
attend Museums10 Curators meetings
occasional evening and weekend hours are expected
Advanced degree in art history and a minimum of 5 years of museum curatorial experience (or related exhibitions planning/coordination experience), with a preference for candidates with some academic museum experience; a broad knowledge of art history and a keen eye for design and museum display methods; excellent project management skills; strong writing, editing, and communications skills; a proclivity for collaborative work in a fast-paced, team-based environment; and the ability to work both autonomously and collectively on multiple projects as needed; training in art handling; advanced familiarity with Excel, Google Drive, Adobe Creative Suite, as well as collections database programs (i.e., Mimsy) and virtual exhibition programs (i.e., Google Sketch-up); some experience using website management platforms.
