Founded in 1937, The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is New Mexico’s oldest non-profit, independent museum. The Wheelwright offers unique exhibitions of contemporary and historic Native American art. We’re famous for our focus on little-known genres and for solo shows by living Native American artists. We are the home of the Jim and Lauris Phillips Center for the Study of Southwestern Jewelry, the most comprehensive collection of Navajo and Pueblo jewelry in the world.
The curator supervises curatorial and exhibitions staff, volunteers, fellows, interns, and contractors; consults with the director and other staff to conceive, plan, and implement acquisitions, research, exhibitions, and related programming; negotiates loans from other institutions and collectors; interacts with featured artists; researches and writes the content of exhibitions and publications; researches and writes grant proposals; maintains department budget and inventory; represents the museum to the public and at conferences.
