Printed Matter is seeking a part-time Programming & Design Assistant. The position will work closely with Printed Matter’s Programming Manager to support a range of initiatives connected to the organization’s non-profit programs, with a focus on exhibitions and publications. The Programming & Design Assistant should have an interest in artists’ books, excellent writing skills, as well as a proficiency in design software with past experience sending projects to print. This is a part-time, 3-days a week position with an hourly wage of $18/hr.

Responsibilities
  • Provide design support for various Printed Matter programming initiatives, from designing event invitations and promotional postcards to conceptualizing exhibition identities and supporting on corresponding materials (wall vinyl, pamphlets, posters, etc.).

  • Provide support to Printed Matter’s exhibition program, including cataloging, production assistance for accompanying print material, and on-site install.

  • Provide support to Printed Matter’s publishing program, including assistance in administering the Emerging Artists Publication Series and other ongoing publication projects.

  • Provide support on programming-related communications, writing concise texts in connection with Printed Matter events, editions and inventory; laying out email newsletters; and keeping website up to date.

  • Support with promotional initiatives, including generating press releases and related material to secure coverage of Printed Matter activities; responding to ongoing press inquiries.

  • Provide day-of support with Printed Matter’s schedule of in-store events, helping as needed with set-up and break-down.

Requirements
  • Passion for Printed Matter’s mission

  • Engagement in contemporary artists’ books and publications and an understanding of the contemporary art publishing world

  • Experience producing web and print design projects

  • Excellent organizational skills with great attention to detail

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and work in a busy office setting

  • Proficiency in design software (InDesign, Photoshop) and Microsoft Office

  • Ability to perform physical work (e.g. lifting boxes of approx. 20 pounds)
