As a highly engaged member of the Conservation team, the Assistant Paintings Conservator addresses the needs of paintings in our holdings and collections, on loan, and in gallery installations, exhibitions, and traveling tours.

Responsibilities
  • With the Associate Paintings Conservator, plan the schedule and work of all project conservators, fellows, interns, and volunteers in the paintings lab

  • Oversee appropriate treatment of the collections in all curatorial areas

  • Manage scheduling and budgeting of loans, gallery installations, exhibitions, and traveling tours

  • Work with Museum staff to ensure all collection paintings are properly stored and handled

Requirements

Graduate degree in conservation or equivalent experience, with a specialty in paintings conservation

Museum laboratory experience working with diverse collections and periods

Excellent organizational and research skills

Ability to operate a pXRF, polarized light microscope, and FORS, and experience using MBI techniques

Exemplary hand skills and ability to carry through conservation treatments such as varnish removal, cleaning, compensation, and tear repair

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to plan ahead for loans, gallery installations, and exhibitions, and to provide work schedules and budgets

Team player, able to participate in the overall goals of our Conservation department and to work with Museum staff in order to ensure the care of our collections
