The Museum of Pop Culture’s mission is to make creative expression a life-changing force by offering experiences that inspire and connect our communities. Curator is responsible for generating content for the museum by organizing exhibitions, developing collections, conducting oral history interviews, and writing for publications which align with our mission. The Curator is also responsible for the oversight of designated traveling exhibitions that tour to the museum. The individual should be seen as a leader in the field of popular culture, possessing a national reputation and network of contacts, will represent the museum at public presentations and to the media, and will work with the curatorial team and other members of the staff to advance the institution’s mission. The Curator must be capable of working in a highly collaborative environment and be able to articulate complex ideas and proposals. The Curator should be seen as generalist in nature, able to move between a wide range of topics, both historical and current, always with an eye to the connection with the museum’s audience.

Responsibilities

EXHIBITIONS

  • Develop at least one major exhibition every two years

  • Generate all exhibition content, or oversee contractors in those roles

  • Coordinate and install assigned exhibitions traveling to the museum from other institutions

  • Conduct Oral History interviews with notable popular culture figures

  • Play a significant role in the formulation of the overall direction of the museum’s artistic efforts and long-range exhibition schedule

  • With the curatorial and collections staff, insure that the highest level of professional care is given to works in the museum’s collection and on loan

  • Recommend objects for acquisition

  • Work with the Director of Education and Public Programs to develop exhibition-related programming and educational materials

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  • Represent the museum to the press and public at large

  • Maintain a visible role in the community including the maintenance of relationships with collectors, donors, and members of the general public

  • Provide information and assistance to the Marketing department to develop communications and marketing materials and strategies regarding exhibitions and programs

  • Contribute to museum publications and communication efforts as requested

  • In conjunction with the Advancement department, participate in the planning and execution of programs for affiliate support groups such as Council Circle

  • Participate in other museum membership and public programs

Requirements
  • Wide knowledge of and enthusiasm about popular culture is essential

  • Advanced degree or related experience in popular culture, literature, film studies, musicology or related field

  • Three to five years of curatorial experience with a record of increasing professional responsibility and measurable accomplishments; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with colleagues, other employees, donors, and lenders

  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail

  • Basic MS Office skills essential; database proficiency preferred, especially TMS (The Museum System); design software such as Sketchup and Adobe Creative Suite preferred

  • Must be detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills in order to manage a continuous workflow in a high volume, multi-tasking environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with a dynamic range of people

  • Proven ability to provide effective customer service for internal and external client groups
