The Registrar is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of registrarial procedures related to the permanent collection, exhibitions, and Sculpture Park. The Registrar also manages the curatorial budget, works closely with the curators, and supervises the head preparator.
DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum organizes temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art in the Museum galleries and commissions and loans outdoor sculptures and installations in the Park. The Permanent Collection comprises over 3,500 artworks in several media: photography, prints, painting, drawing, sculpture, multi-media, and new media.
Maintains accurate records of the permanent collection
Updates the collections management computer database including information on artists in the permanent collection
Records and updates the exact location of all works in the permanent collection on the collections management database
Maintains accessioning procedures, including arranging for photography of new acquisitions
Registers all incoming and outgoing loans to and from the Museum and Sculpture Park including preparation of receipts, loan forms, and condition reports
Arranges shipping, packing, and insurance for Museum exhibitions and the Sculpture Park
Negotiates fine art insurance and maintains insurance records for the permanent collection, exhibitions, and the Sculpture Park
Arranges and manages the storage of works of art on campus and off-site storage
Manages operations at off site storage facility including the HVAC system, security, and utilities
Assists with exhibition installations and archiving of exhibition files
Assists curators in coordinating collections inventory and deaccessioning procedures
Maintains digital images for the permanent collection and exhibitions
Monitors and maintains temperature and humidity in the galleries and storage areas
Works with the curator to create department budgets; implements and monitors the budget
A Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Fine Arts, Museum Studies Program or related field or equivalent work experience
5 years of museum experience in registration
Experience working with contemporary art and artists
Knowledge of best museum practices for collections management procedures including art handling, storage, tracking of objects, and working with conservators and framers
Knowledge of computer systems including multi-platform, data base management, imaging software, and spreadsheets
Ability to work in a fast paced environment and deliver results while managing multiple projects
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with financial and logistical information
Meticulous attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
Ability to work well with staff, volunteers, collectors, artists, and vendors
