The Historic Trades Specialist’s position will work cooperatively with the Deputy Director for Facilities, the Maintenance Section of Facilities, and the Collections and Curatorial Division to provide technical work in the preservation and maintenance of interiors and exteriors of buildings, grounds and gardens.

Responsibilities
  • Performs hands-on cleaning and repair of architectural materials and finishes in building interior and exteriors and on the grounds, using knowledge of professional standards for collection care and historic preservation and general maintenance standards.

  • Makes general minor repairs to brick, stone, tile, and cementitious materials.

  • Makes general minor repairs to wood components, door locks, hinges, brackets, and other hardware fixtures.

  • Mixes paint, plaster, mortar, and cement and applies independently.

  • Paints, sands, applies primer and finish coat using desired application method, independently.

  • Erects scaffolding; loads and unloads materials, cleans tools, and work area upon completion of project.

  • Assists in advising of condition of materials and finishes and advises supervisor on conditions, causes of problems, and possible means of solving problems

  • Accompanies on–site contractors and assists, if needed, in conservation treatment, historic preservation, and general maintenance of materials and finishes.

  • Documents work through written reports.

  • As needed, contributes to housekeeping/preservation manual for proper care and maintenance of historic interiors, exteriors, and collections.

  • Occasionally assists in storage and rehousing of collection materials.

  • Performs related work as required.

  • As a Maintenance Section team member, may be occasionally required to perform other tasks to assist the Section in project or event work.

Requirements

Competency or position requirements

  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of the trades areas to which assigned. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to interpret and work from rough sketches. Ability to make rough estimates of time and material requirements. Ability to develop skill in the use and care of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade’s areas concerned.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This position can expect to spend much of their time outside working in the elements or in tight spaces. Must also have the ability to climb ladders, lift and move 25-50 lbs. frequently, and 50-100 lbs. occasionally. This list is not all inclusive.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position, working a varying schedule that may include weekend and holidays. Some overtime will be required.

Travel

  • Travel is not anticipated.

Education and Experience

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED, five years of preservation or conservation experience performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks or assisting with maintenance and repairs in any of a variety of the skilled trades is required.

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree, with specialized training in one or more historic trades and at least two years of related experience.

Certifications Required

  • No Additional certifications, skills and/or licenses are required.
