Curators sought for two upcoming exhibitions at ATHICA: Athens Institute of Contemporary Art, a 501©(3) independent, non-profit gallery promoting and supporting innovative contemporary art and artists through exhibitions, education, and events in Athens and Northeast Georgia for over 17 years.
A curatorial stipend will be provided in exchange for curatorial services to include any of the following: recruitment of artists (some artists may already have been selected), selection of work, coordination of installation and exhibition design, and exhibition essay. Work to take place in coordination with ATHICA management with installation and publication assistance provided.
Individual curators sought for each of the following exhibitions:
(1) Theme: Losing Control: Guns, Government, and Group-Think, scheduled for November-December 2019.
(2) Theme: Lost in the Weeds: Climate Change and Human Nature, scheduled for April-May 2020.
Education/Experience
MFA / MA in related field preferred; currently enrollment in grad school is OK. Studio art, art history, museum studies, or appropriate combination of experience and academic background.
Experience as a curator or assistant curator preferred, however, emerging practitioners with strong proposals will be considered.
Curatorial Practice
Demonstrated practice of active engagement with and awareness of contemporary art, awareness of contemporary artists, and history of meeting artists, studio visits, and developing relationships with potential artists
Demonstrated ability to identify potential artists, recruit artists, and select work with a cohesive curatorial vision
Strong writing skills and ability to write engaging curatorial essays about selected work and exhibition theme, with appropriate cultural, contextual, and authoritative references
