We are seeking a mid-level digital designer who will work as part of our London-based editorial design team. Reporting to the Head of Graphics and under the guidance of the Art Director and Senior Digital Designer. The successful candidate will work closely with the publication’s digital team on a wide variety of projects and will produce compelling and comprehensive designs, prototypes and graphics for a new generation of digital products.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a strong portfolio and practical design experience, producing creative visual solutions whilst observing best practices. Coding skills and web development knowledge are a must, strong CSS and HTML at the bare minimum.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver excellent design across our product base while articulating and upholding the brand values

  • Follow closely the guidance of The Economist’s Design System in order to integrate styling and components within new and existing digital products

  • Gather and agree requirements, helping to develop and plan design briefs for each project

  • Clearly communicate your design rationale with the confidence to present your work to your peers and stakeholders

  • Keep up-to-date on innovations in the design world, and use this to keep your output fresh and relevant

Requirements
  • Solid experience of designing for web and digital

  • An excellent eye for detail and firm understanding of typographic principles

  • Robust typographic and information design abilities

  • Expert knowledge of CSS, HTML, and the ability to use rapid prototyping tools

  • An appreciation for user experience and user-centred design

  • Experience working across digital platforms and devices, including design for different screen sizes

  • Demonstrable experience of working in Sketch, the Adobe suite or equivalent software

  • Experience of working to tight deadlines

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Self-motivation, and the ability to perform well and stay calm under pressure

  • A keen interest in global politics and current affairs

  • Friendly and receptive demeanour, an enthusiastic team-worker

  • A good level of general education, a design degree or equivalent qualification

  • Good communication skills and fluency in English
