Provide customer service and security for the Seattle Art Museum while implementing security policies and procedures related to the protection of art, the security of museum facilities, and the safety and protection of staff and visitors.

Seattle Art Museum offers flexible scheduling. Due to varying demand, Visitor Services Officers are asked to work different hours every week. Must be available weekends and late evenings, mostly Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; typically 10-18 hours a week, and up to 25 hours/week.

Responsibilities
  • Provide security for galleries, public spaces, meeting rooms, offices, storage areas, traffic corridors, and physical plants. Regulate and control traffic through the galleries; ensure the smooth operation of special events, previews, and receptions.

  • Be a customer service role model for other staff, volunteers and visitors while helping to ensure their safety and enjoyment while visiting the museum. Observe and assist visitors; correct or report problems as appropriate. Inform visitors of rules, regulations, and proper conduct while in the museum.

  • Observe artwork for change of any kind; report problems to supervisor for immediate notification to registrar; report any building conditions requiring attention to maintenance.

  • Cooperate with Admissions, Membership and volunteers to learn and convey Museum information to enhance visitor’s Museum experience.

  • Maintain knowledge of current policies, procedures, and security system operation in order to correctly implement judgment and actions for protection of art, and the safety and protection of Museum staff and visitors.

  • Report emergencies as well as administer first aid and respond to calls for emergency assistance.

  • Complete written reports detailing incidents.

  • Participate in training programs for emergency situations, including fire, theft, and vandalism.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • High School graduate or GED.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills.

  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.

  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to make immediate decisions related to enforcement of regulations.

  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment by carrying out established policies and procedures for security and safety of people, artwork and Museum facilities in a complete, consistent and timely manner.

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to change in a dynamically moving event-driven environment.

  • Must have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations and help resolve customer complaints.

  • Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.

  • Must be reliable.

  • Must be able to pass and maintain a Security Background Check clearance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work areas are inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor event sites, in all types of weather. Work requires long periods of sustained standing during Museum events. May have contact with hostile or abusive members of the public. Required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Position is required to use assigned equipment, including, but not limited to, radios, flashlights, telephones, dispatch software and other assigned equipment.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Security Specific Functions: Ability to perform the physical activities inherent in security duties, such as walking, running, standing, ascending and descending stairs in a hi-rise building and utilizing defensive tactics. Ability to engage in those physical activities for typical shift durations.

  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: Almost all of time (approximately 95%) is spent standing or moving around the work area.

  • Speaking/Hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with donors, members, the public, and co-workers.

  • Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: The ability to lift and carry up to twenty pounds is necessary for moving material and equipment for events.

  • Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively use the computer screens.

  • Stooping/Kneeling: The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing files.

  • Reaching/Handling: Good manual dexterity is necessary for computer keyboard use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
