Creates thoughtful and engaging designs of interior spaces, environmental and interpretive elements and casework for special exhibitions, major permanent collection re-installations and gallery projects. Works collaboratively with cross-departmental teams to develop spaces and installations that meet the DIA’s visitor-centered approach and reflect creativity and best practices in design. Is responsible for the development and execution of designs, which includes producing drawings and documents for conception, development, and construction as well as oversees details for the construction, production, and installation.

Responsibilities
  • Designs exhibitions, major permanent collection re-installations, and gallery projects working collaboratively with Curatorial, Interpretation, Registration, Collections Management, Conservation, Protection Services, Graphics, Lighting, Exhibitions Project Manager, and others.

  • Works collaboratively with Exhibitions administrative and design staff, Collections Management, Conservation and Registrar to develop, monitor and meet schedules and budget for design development, construction, and installation.

  • Works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure cohesive plan that meets all design expectations and standards. Provides detailed information to project and construction managers, builders, vendors, fabricators, technicians, and installers.

  • Responsible for developing and producing all design, construction, technical drawings and bid documents including project manuals that outline contractual terms, conditions and requirements that define the roles, responsibilities, and construction work in order to meet specifications for production, fabrication, construction, and installation.

  • Ensures cohesive designs that meet best design practice standards and criteria for museum presentation. Produces detailed design and technical drawings for casework and display elements that meet all conservation standards.

  • Seeks information for the artworks requirements and develops and maintains inventories including, but not limited to: artwork, mounts, casework, risers, conservation and lender requirements etc.

  • In conjunction with Collections Management and Purchasing Department, oversees, coordinates and communicates bid and contract process including submissions, evaluations, and negotiations. During the bid process works to develop and write the bid form including project manuals outlining scope of work and construction requirements, vendor requests, schedule and expenses. Participates in vendor walkthroughs, preliminary construction meetings, development of construction schedule and fabrication deadlines with external contractors.

  • Systematically surveys spaces in the museum to create documents with updated and current information. Creates plans, elevations, and 3D models of spaces.

  • Is a contact and resource of the DIA staff in finding and supplying information on the building, museum gallery, and design drawings for past and present, casework, color, square footage, materials used, etc.

  • Aids in other museum design projects as requested.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture; post graduate work preferred

  • Experience in a museum environment, fine art museum preferred.

  • 5+ years in architectural design from conception to execution, including schematic design, museum casework design and engineering, design development, construction documents, bid process, and construction administration.

  • Advance proficiency with computer-aided design programs AutoCad and/or Rivit; 3D modeling software such as Sketchup or Rhino; knowledge of MS office/Adobe Design Suite; knowledge of SharePoint and TMS a plus

  • Demonstrated success with the development and adherence to budgets and production schedules

  • Superior organization and time/project-management

  • Working knowledge of building codes and compliances and ADA requirements

  • Experience with writing contracts and project manuals, including but not limited to bid documents, contractual terms, construction conditions and specifications

  • Knowledge of best practices in lighting and graphic design

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
