DYNAMIC NON-PROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATION SEEKS “Head Registrar”

The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is the leader in traveling exhibitions internationally. A nonprofit organization founded in 1909, the AFA is dedicated to enriching the public’s experience and understanding of the visual arts through organizing and touring art exhibitions for presentation in museums around the world, publishing exhibition catalogues featuring important scholarly research, and developing educational programs.

Responsibilities
  • Manage all registrarial aspects of traveling exhibitions, including: organization of packing/crating/installation requirements and domestic and international shipping.

  • Liaise with venue institutions to ensure that exhibition contract and lender requirements are met. Supervise unpacking/packing and installations/deinstallations at venues.

  • Draft and review contracts for registrarial and installation requirements.

  • Liase with in-house curatorial and exhibitions staff on forward planning for exhibitions including review of venue facilities and tour schedules;

  • Develop, review, and update budget and cash flow estimates.

  • Oversee insurance coverage for exhibitions, including preparing indemnity applications.

  • Responsible for day-to-day administrative operations and long-term planning for the registration department.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Head Registrar supervises Exhibition Registrars and independent contractors and oversees their coordination of all aspects of assigned exhibitions.
Requirements
  • BA required, MA preferred, with a background in one of the following areas: Art History, Museum Studies, Library Science, or Arts Administration.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in registrarial or exhibitions management.

  • Knowledge of fine arts packing standards and international shipping as well as experience with condition reporting.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects of various scales and budgets.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, must maintain a valid passport.
