Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art

Under the supervision of the Curator and Department Head, the Assistant Curator will assist with day-to-day operations and research for the department. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance to curator and department head in day-to-day departmental operations

  • Maintains and updates physical and digital departmental records in accordance with DIA archival and data standards

  • Researches and documents the contemporary art collection as well as proposed acquisitions

  • Fields and responds to inquiries from the general public, scholars, and others in the field

  • Assists in the upkeep of and alterations to the contemporary permanent collection gallery installations

  • Assists in the care of the contemporary permanent collection and loan objects with museum conservators and registrars

  • Supports the conception, preparation, research, and execution of exhibitions, publications, and public programs

  • Collaborates effectively with all museum staff

  • Supports the cultivation of patrons

  • Travels, on occasion, for departmental research and serves as a courier as needed

  • Other related duties as required

Requirements
  • M.A. in Art History, or related field preferred

  • Specialization in contemporary art from 1950 until the present. Knowledge of Detroit’s art history and artists is desired.

  • At least two to three years of experience working in a museum environment, preferred

  • Excellent research, writing, time management, and organizational skills required

  • Previous experience with object-based, archival, and market research, preferred

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • A team player with a desire to support the DIA mission, vision and values

  • Excellent English language written and verbal communication skills required

  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications

  • Experience with The Museum System (TMS) database, preferred

  • Must have strong interpersonal and professional skills for collaboration with colleagues, museum patrons and supporters, and the public

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a collaborative and fast-paced work environment
