Otis College of Art and Design is accepting applications for a full-time faculty appointment in its Fine Arts department. The successful candidate will teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in painting; serve as a mentor in an interdisciplinary studio; participate in the development of painting and general Fine Arts curriculum. Initial placement in rank is recommended by the department Chair and requires review and approval of the Chair of the Rank & Promotion Committee and the Provost. The College does not grant faculty tenure; this is a renewable full‐time faculty appointment subject to annual renewal based on a performance review. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019. The faculty in this position reports to the Chair of Fine Arts and Director of Painting.

Responsibilities
  • Teaches a full-time studio contact hour load (18 contact hours per week each semester).

  • Provides a minimum of 6 hours on average per week in service to the department and the College as assigned by the Chair (i.e., serving on college-wide committees, attending faculty meetings, working department lab hours, participating in shared-governance).

  • Meets the goals and objectives of course curriculum, defined learning outcomes, and assessment protocols.

  • Mentors students in assigned classes, including student advisement, in either the junior level or senior level interdisciplinary studio.

  • Teaches across a variety of medium in the junior level or senior level interdisciplinary studio.

  • Participates in the development of painting curriculum.

  • Sets and models standards for maintaining a professional painting studio.

  • Presents art to students in context, outside of the classroom, in museums and galleries both locally and, potentially, in travel study courses.

  • Provides guidance and direction to teaching assistants and part-time faculty members. Schedules, assigns, and prioritizes workloads as well as sets appropriate deadlines; monitors classroom studios.

  • Participates in administrative duties such as writing course syllabi, developing curricular materials, monitoring student attendance, documenting student learning, contributing to program assessment, and submitting grades in a timely manner.

  • Enhances the visibility and promotion of the department through attending of on-and-off-campus events.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Requirements
  • MFA degree or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.

  • Teaching experience in the field of painting and developing curriculum at a similarly accredited institution of higher learning for a minimum of three years.

  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate painting levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of materials in a variety of media using various painting methods.

  • Experience developing electives in painting and other related curricular areas.

  • Thorough understanding of the history and practice of modern and contemporary art.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

  • Ability to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional artists/educators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional standing as a practicing/exhibiting artist with a minimum of 3 years’ exhibition history preferably with an international reputation.

  • An on-going, active studio practice.

  • Ability to teach outside the classroom in museums and galleries. Experience teaching travel study courses desired.

  • Experience working with students in all media at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in a college or university environment.

  • Ability to teach effectively to a diverse range of learning styles.

  • Experience in research, practice and teaching across disciplines.
