Founded by philanthropist and filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, Co-CEO and President of Ariel Investments, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will inspire current and future generations through the universal art of visual storytelling. The museum will present a permanent collection and rotating exhibitions for diverse public audiences which will feature illustrations, paintings, comic art, photography, and an in-depth exploration of the arts of filmmaking (including storyboards, costumes, animation, visual effects, and more). Extensive education programming designed for all ages will explore innovative ways for visitors to engage with narrative art. Designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects and under construction in Los Angeles’ Expo Park, the museum will feature new public green space, state-of-the-art cinematic theaters, a research library, numerous spaces for onsite education, restaurants, retail, and event spaces. Position Summary (Intent and purpose of the role)

Reporting to the Managing Director, Museum Experience, the Exhibition Designer will lead design efforts to produce engaging, original, and accessible exhibitions that will shape the visitor experience of a new museum. This position is responsible for all phases of the exhibition design process including conceptual, schematic, design development and construction drawings for both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Exhibition Designer works in close collaboration with numerous colleagues across the museum (i.e. Exhibition Management, Interpretive Media, Curatorial, Collections Management, Education, Marketing), and external partners as needed, in order to realize visually rich, innovative, and interactive experiences that support the Museum’s brand and mission.

Primary Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Exhibition Design

  • Conceptualize original and holistic exhibition design approaches; consider input from diverse teams across the organization, encouraging genuine collaboration;

  • Develop look and feel and visual identities for galleries;

  • Produce drawings required for each phase of exhibition design from conceptual sketches and renderings, to measured plans and elevations and production files;

  • Partner with Project Managers to develop, and responsibly manage, design aspects of project budgets and schedules;

  • Research and specify materials, conduct prototyping and testing, as needed; coordinate and incorporate engineering, electrical, fire safety, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and code requirements in construction packages;

  • Serve as internal resource and partner to external design firms, as needed;

  • Review design proofs and prototypes, and ensure high-quality final production from outside fabrication and print vendors;

  • Actively participate in exhibition installation, making aesthetic decisions regarding presentation and lighting of artworks, in consultation with curators and conservators.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture, design, art, theater or in a related field;

  • At least five (5) years of museum exhibition experience, spanning all aspects of the design process from concept to installation;

Skills

  • Strong 3D design skills (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Sketchup, or similar applications) and rendering software (Rhino);

  • Advanced proficiency in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite;

Strong communication skills (sketch and verbal) and ability to clearly articulate ideas;

  • Confident in presenting design ideas and exhibition concepts to colleagues, leadership, and as necessary, public audiences;

Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of design fabrication & production methods, and cost estimating;

  • Understanding of ADA, building codes and Universal design;

  • Strong organizational ability to assess priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously;

  • Keeps current on design trends and best practices;

  • Strong ability to thrive in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment and is invigorated by collaborating with a team of diverse expertise;

  • Patient, solutions-oriented designer who can adapt to changing priorities and navigate complex relationships with internal and external partners.
