The School of Design at Pratt Institute seeks a dynamic and visionary leader with outstanding communication, listening and organizational skills who will build upon the strengths of the existing programs to serve as Chairperson of the Interior Design department. The department is a world-renowned leader in the field and currently offers a 60 credit MFA, a 126 credit BFA that is CIDA accredited and a minor in interior design for undergraduates. The Chairperson is responsible for the overall management and future direction of department’s academic programs, in accordance with Pratt’s mission and in support of the institution’s strategic plan. The chairperson will assume academic and administrative leadership of the department and will develop programs to complement, enhance and build upon the prestige and reputation of our Interior Design programs.
Applicants should have strong administrative and teaching experience and excellent communication skills with an equitable leadership style. This administrative appointment carries a twelve-month per year workload and a three-year contract that may be renewed.
The selected candidate reports to Dean of the School of Design and will be responsible for developing initiatives to complement, enhance and build upon the prestige and reputation of the interior design department. The chair will work closely with dean and other department chairs in the school as we continue to develop inter and transdisciplinary opportunities for students and faculty. The Chairperson will oversee approximately 65 faculty, an Assistant Chair, and an Assistant to the Chair.

Supervise and develop the department’s curriculum and educational programs
Recruit, supervise, evaluate, and develop faculty
Recruit and advise students
Develop and maintain assessment instruments, including program reviews
Oversight of the department’s budget and allocation of resources, course scheduling and departmental facilities
Lead departmental efforts in CIDA, NASAD and MSCHE accreditation
Establish links to professional organizations and leading practitioners in the field
Assist the Dean and Institutional Advancement in fundraising and to advance the program’s profile
Serve on School and Institute committees
Carry out special projects as assigned by the Dean
Perform all other related duties as required.
Education Terminal degree in interior design or a related field from an accredited institution, domestic or international.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 3-5 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education and professional or creative practice in interior design or a related field. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong administrative skills and interpersonal skills, a level of inter-cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations, and understanding the educational benefits of diversity, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion are essential.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
