The Museum seeks a Manager of Public Programs to initiate, develop, implement, and evaluate the BMA’s programmatic offerings to enhance and broaden engagement with the Birmingham community, region, and our increasingly national and international audience. They will conceptualize wide-ranging, exciting, and informative programs that consider the museum’s collections and exhibitions and connect them to local and global issues relevant today.
Collaborates with Curators to develop a broad spectrum of programs to be offered, including (but not limited to) gallery talks, lectures, performances, and festivals.
Works closely with Curator of Education and other Museum staff to identify community needs and interests and ways in which to engage our collection, exhibitions, and mission.
Identify, attract, and grow new audiences, retain existing audience, and increase engagement and participation through a variety of programs, which appeal to a diverse constituency.
Schedule, facilitate and manage all aspects of public programs that occur during the week and on weekends.
Act as liaison with speakers and performers and coordinate their schedule. Establish contact with potential speakers and performers; write contract letters, facilitate travel and accommodations, process payment requests.
Arrange for A/V needs of speaker and performers for public programs. Maintain and ensure that computer and projector equipment is in proper working condition.
Analyzes and evaluates programs to continually improve offerings and ensure positive experiences for patrons.
Works with Communications Department to develop and write promotional materials in a timely manner.
Works with Development Department on proposals and reports for grant applications. Researches additional funding sources.
Produces and manages budget for programs.
Serves as a Museum ambassador to City of Birmingham constituencies (99 neighborhoods), regional communities, and civic/community partners to deepen Museum partnerships.
Strengthens and sustains relationships with Birmingham community leaders, artists, universities, and other cultural organizations.
Identifies opportunities in the community to build awareness of the Museum as a vital community resource.
Work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors depending on community events.
Frequently lift and move supplies and boxes of 25 lbs.
Ability to work evenings and weekends to meet program initiatives.
Ability to speak with a variety of audiences in a clear, concise, and organized manner in order to effectively convey information.

Bachelor’s degree in art history, art administration, or related field.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a museum or cultural organization serving diverse audiences through quality and accessible programs.
Valid driver’s license.
