A bespoke auction house in New York is looking for a Specialist to head up their Illustration Art Department. Illustration Art includes original works of narrative art created for books and magazines, advertisements, set and costume designs for theater, dance, and film, fashion drawings, graphic novels, and comics & cartoons. Detailed knowledge of artists and Illustrators is essential. The successful candidate will have knowledge of this subject matter to be able to appraise, catalogue and write about the material, as well as relationships with potential sellers from which to source consignments, and buyers who could be interested in transacting with the house. They will build each sale and work directly with clients, answering any and all inquiries. In addition to the department’s two annual sales, there is an opportunity to curate additional specialized sales. Previous professional experience in an auction house or gallery is a must.
Responsibilities
Source quality consignments from private collectors, estates, dealers, and other sources
Appraise property for two/three sales each year
Catalogue all material
Write condition reports and historical essays
Negotiate client terms
Respond to consignment inquiries
Manage in-house inventory
Install Sale exhibition
Build a client portfolio
Opportunity to curate specialized sales
Requirements
Previous professional experience in art auction houses and/or galleries is a must. This role requires a detail-oriented, organized, and motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills and an appreciation for teamwork. The candidate must demonstrate constructive problem solving, excellent writing skills, quick follow-through, and the ability to manage various tasks in a hectic, fast-paced environment. A BA in a relevant field is required.
