The David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University seeks an experienced and energetic Curator with specialization in contemporary art. The Curator is responsible for organization of exhibitions and care of the collection of more than 7,000 objects. She/he/they assists the Director in planning the Gallery’s exhibition program and is responsible for research and development of 3-4 exhibitions per year. The Curator plans and implements educational programs in conjunction with exhibitions, provides access to the permanent collection for classes and individuals, and works with guest curators and artists. Other important duties include grant writing, fundraising and donor cultivation, creation of publicity and promotional material, and support of related University projects.
The Bell Gallery is at a point of transition: in the process of integrating with the Brown Arts Initiative and about to complete a strategic plan. Both of these actions will expand the role of the Curator. The Curator will take on an advisory role with the Cohen Gallery—and later, after the addition of a Curator of Academic Programs, will oversee the exhibition program of the Cohen Gallery. A greater emphasis on curricular engagement with the gallery’s exhibitions and collections will bring the Curator together with faculty and students across campus. The Curator must foster and maintain collegial, collaborative relationships with Bell and BAI leadership and with faculty and students.
The Curator should be able to fill in for the Director at high-level meetings when asked, and be able to speak knowledgeably about the Gallery’s programs and policies. She/he/they will represent the Gallery on campus and in the community.
Some evening and weekend work is required.
