The director is responsible for oversight of all administrative aspects of the Bradbury Art Museum, including working in collaboration with the curator on an exhibition schedule, overseeing the management of the university art collection, developing and maintaining collection management protocols in collaboration with the collections manager, supervising museum staff, maintaining the museum budget, and providing vision and focus for the Museum. Additionally, the director must prepare reports, grant applications, fundraising proposals, and work closely with the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Communication and University Advancement.
Write press releases, public service announcements, or other informational materials used to develop public relations and grow awareness of the museum, with input from the Office of Communications
Work with University Advancement to increase financial support for the museum, including grant writing
Maintain relationships with important museum supporters, involving them in museum events
Supervise full-time museum staff
Train, schedule, and supervise student gallery workers responsible for daily museum operations and who assist with exhibition preparations
Manage museum budgets
Perform related responsibilities as required and assigned by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Communications
Complete and maintain a collections management policy
Oversee the record keeping of the Collections Manager using a collections database, making sure that museum industry standards and best practices are consistently met
Work with the registrar to maintain proper storage of objects
Manage the office loan program, including record-keeping and annual condition checks
Supervise all aspects of mounting all exhibitions in the museum, through direct collaboration with the Curator
Coordinate receipt and return of artworks, arranging for insurance coverage for exhibitions
Work with curatorial staff to develop touring exhibitions utilizing university collections
Coordinate receptions for exhibition opening
Other duties as assigned
The director must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal relationship skills, and be knowledgeable in the arts. Individual must be able to generate and maintain contacts with artists, curators, and Museum directors and build a network of artists and associates ensuring the ability to curate, secure and mount exhibitions. The director must have the ability to be an advocate for the arts. Must be able to interact effectively with faculty, students, administration, and public.
The director must hold a master’s degree related to art, museum studies, or art administration.
The individual should have significant museum or gallery experience.
Leadership experience preferred.
