Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Curator for the Zimmerli Art Museum. The Assistant Curator is a full-time member of staff who is responsible for organization of temporary exhibitions, based on his or her research on objects in the Zimmerlis Collections of Russian art, particularly the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union. The Assistant Curator works with variety of the departments at the Zimmerli and within the University to institute the highest professional standards in the field, advance the institutions mission, and to meet the goals of Zimmerli Art Museums long-range plan.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Organizes production of catalogs and/or brochures pertaining to such exhibitions, including communication with registrars office about photography and contacts and negotiations with potential authors for such publications.

  • Participates in design decisions for the publication and contributes to the proofreading and color proofing.

  • Produces wall texts and didactic labels on the objects in the exhibitions and works with registrar to insure proper recording of such objects in The Museum System database.

  • Works with the museum staff on publicity and education programs and materials related to the exhibitions.

  • Conducts tours on temporary exhibitions and permanent collections to University students and the general public.

  • Serves as liaison to other departments within the University and assists in making museums resources available to various Universitys departments.

Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Art History

  • General knowledge of Russian and Ukrainian culture

  • Adequate knowledge of Russian and Ukrainian languages

  • Specialization in Russian art or the art of former Soviet republics

  • Familiarity and experience with appropriate, current computer programs and technology

  • Detail oriented

  • Strong team working abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Russian and Ukrainian languages

  • Specialization in Soviet Nonconformist Art

  • Previous curatorial experience

  • Familiarity with the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union

  • Familiarity with The Museum System software is preferred
