The VCU School of the Arts seeks highly responsible and motivated counselors and senior counselors to assist with and provide leadership during the Summer Intensive Pre-College Residency Program for High School Students:

July 7-26, 2019

Responsibilities

The counseling team goal is to provide a superior quality experience for each participant. All counselors are required to live in on-campus housing with the high school students, and assist them 24-hours a day (specific times depend on daily assigned shift) during the three-week program.

Counselors are expected to serve as ambassadors of the University to visiting students and their parents, attend all training sessions, attend daily de-briefing meetings with the Head of Residence Life and the Program Director, and participate in field trips and other group activities.

Counselor daily activities include escorting students to and from campus housing, meals, morning and afternoon classes, evening modules and social activities. While Senior counselor activities include: helping lead counseling team training sessions, supervising, coaching and motivating a team of counselors; and resolving student and counselor concerns.

All counselors will be trained over two days at the end of June (date TBA ) from 9A-4P. Training attendance is mandatory.

Requirements
  • High energy, enthusiastic

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • A passion for working with young people

  • Excellent inter-personal skills including a high-level of desire, patience, and sensitivity to meet the needs of the students at all times

  • A clear understanding of University and Residence Life policies, as well as the ability to monitor behavior and convey policies to the students

  • Ability to clearly and assertively address minor infractions and misunderstandings with students

  • Ability to provide leadership and to closely monitor the students throughout the program to ensure their safety

  • Strong organization and communication skills

  • A valid driver’s license and transportation for Senior Counselors

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who are: (1) VCU School of the Arts graduate and undergraduate students, (2) Resident Assistants, or those who have previous experience as a residence hall assistant, (3) rising VCU juniors, seniors and graduate students, (4) experienced working at summer camps for high school students, and/or (5) teachers.
