Position Summary: Lead position to acquire and site sculpture and related artwork for the permanent collection; develop themes and ideas for sculpture exhibitions; collaboratively select and secure objects for sculpture exhibitions; build art community relationships; and serve as an officer of the corporation and a member of the management team.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Research, recommend, and acquire sculpture and related art within the context of our established collection practices and policies.

  • Develop and organize sculpture exhibitions complementing our permanent collection. The sculpture exhibition program is devoted to sculptural traditions for the purposes of understanding, appreciating, and enjoying sculpture and related objects and materials.

  • Take a lead role to ensure that donor agreements relating to all current and all future sculpture and art acquisitions are honored.

  • Interface and take the lead staff role with the Sculpture Advisory Board Committee, which serves as an advisory body to this position for sculpture and art acquisitions and sculpture exhibitions. Advise the committee on its role of accessioning and deaccessioning artwork.

  • Build strong relationships with artists, galleries, artists’ foundations and estates, and the national and international art community.

  • Provide leadership to the Sculpture & Sculpture Exhibitions Department, including art preservation and conservation, financial stewardship, and departmental budgeting.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Sculpture, Art Collections, Exhibitions & Installations; Vice President of Horticulture on sculpture sites; the Vice President of Architecture, Environment, Facilities & Technology on facility issues; the Director of Education to promote the understanding of artwork and exhibitions; the Director of Communications on the voice of all guest-facing communications.

  • Serve on the Diversity & Inclusion and Long-Range Planning Board Committees.

  • Be a highly effective teacher and communicator.

  • Other duties as assigned by the President & CEO

Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in art history or museum studies, Ph. D preferred. A concentration in sculpture and/or Modern and Contemporary Art is preferred.

  • Proven track record of working with artists and galleries relative to acquisitions and exhibitions in a museum context.

  • Accomplished lecturer and publisher relating to Modern and Contemporary Art.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to: work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings; extensively travel and obtain a passport; to work in a fast paced, multi-faceted and culturally diverse museum environment. Required to operate computers and office equipment. Must have the mobility to move around in office, grounds, and exhibition areas and if able, lift 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
