The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting to the Director and working closely with the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, the CFO oversees and maintains the financial operations of the Museum; provides the Museum’s leadership with reports and analysis of the Museum’s activities; and develops procedures and standards to maintain the fiscal health of the Museum. A member of the senior leadership team, the CFO is responsible for balancing the Museum’s mission and financial sustainability, and is critical to developing and implementing the Museum strategic plan. The CFO oversees a budget analyst and a staff accountant and works closely with all Museum departments as well as several outside consultants.

Responsibilities

General

  • Manage the Museum’s institutional budget of $6 million and its investment portfolio of $40 million, as well as the capital and endowment campaign budget of $13 million and its financial framework.

  • Oversee all aspects of the Museum’s finances including accounting, tax filings, investment management, audits, risk management, and financial planning and analysis.

  • Work closely with the Museum’s Board of Trustees, and act as the primary staff contact to the Finance and Investment Committee and Audit Committee.

Investment Management

  • Serve as liaison with investment firm to oversee investment portfolio. Review and update investment policy, disclosures, and market risks on a timely basis.

  • Maintain a healthy level of working capital by utilizing cash flow from revenue and purchase cycles.

Retail Operation Management

  • The Museum is the North American distributor of Isamu Noguchi’s Akari light sculptures and manages the distribution of Akari worldwide. The retail operation has annual revenue of approximately $2 million. Additionally, the Museum receives royalty income on several of Noguchi’s designs in production.

  • Work with Director, Deputy Director, and merchandising department to create annual projections and provide guidance on best business practices.

  • Track and process international income and expenses related to the Museum’s merchandise operations and royalties, which requires basic understanding of international currencies and exchange rates and oversee merchant banking and other online transactions to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Financial Management and Controls

  • Oversee governance strategy and financial compliance, including ensuring timely issuance of audited financial statements and filing of various tax forms including Forms 990 and 990T.

  • Serve as the primary liaison with Museum’s accounting firm.

  • Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual closing on a timely basis. Prepare regular financial reports for review by and in discussion with the Museum’s management and Board of Trustees.

  • Work closely with the Development department to manage grants and contributions, and assist in related budgets and expenditure reports.

  • Develop and track capital project budgets with Facilities and Development departments, and maintain financial framework for the campaign.

Payroll, Administration, and Human Resources

  • Supervise all aspects of the Museum’s payroll, the implementation of health insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, commuter, FSA and HRA plans and the museum’s IT strategy.

  • Work with Deputy Director on human resources issues from finance and compliance perspectives.

Requirements
  • A master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field, or equivalent work experience is required. While a CPA is not necessary, knowledge of accounting principles are essential.

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a leadership role in a finance department, preferably in arts organization or other nonprofit and/or in a retail environment, is required.

  • Knowledge of accounting rules and regulations including: USGAAP, USGAAS, IRS regulations, and other finance and compliance requirements is required, including knowledge of Accounting Section Codification (ASC) 958 Not for Profit Entities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Team player with a collaborative ethos and strong supervisory skills

The Chief Financial Officer is a full-time position located in the administrative offices of The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. Work is typically performed in an office environment; prolonged periods of sitting, use of computers and standard office equipment required to accomplish work objectives.
