Yucca Valley Material Lab (YVML) provides accessible and equitable arts education and is a platform for expanding cultural awareness. Located in a rural desert community in Yucca Mesa, CA, YVML supports its mission by offering intensive artist residencies, internships, instructional workshops and public event opportunities for intellectual and cultural exchange which includes performances, symposiums and lectures. The program provides the gift of time to discover, make and reflect, and encourages artists to develop new skills and investigate new modes of making through iterative material exploration. The Community Outreach Coordinator will work to establish collaborative relationships with organizations, communities and individuals within the region in order to promote awareness of the benefits of an arts education and cultural programming. They will assess community needs; reduce barriers for those who may otherwise not attend programs; assess and implement strategies to best serve underserved populations; enhance inclusivity of current program offerings; and promote YVML’s programs through material distribution, general media, and social media. As a representative of YVML they will work to develop and implement initiatives that increase the Lab’s visibility, all of which will be delivered with a sensitivity to diversity and commitment to inclusion.

This is an 8 - 10 month position at approximately 15 hours a week and will begin in the Fall of 2022. The job is mostly onsite with some travel within the So/Cal region.

Responsibilities

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Assess, establish and expand collaborative relationships with regional organizations, communities and individuals that are representative and in support of the organization’s core values and commitments to inclusivity and belonging

  2. Support Artistic Director in developing innovative strategies for sustainable organizational, cultural and community partnerships and programming relevant to the needs of artists and the regional arts ecology

  3. Manage community engagement opportunities for incoming Artists in Residence and support workshop instructors as needed (provide technical assistance when appropriate, develop targeted promotional campaigns for workshops, etc)

  4. Work closely with the Artistic Director to develop income generating projects and fundraising efforts and campaigns for sustainable community engagement

  5. Work closely with Artistic Director to ensure the artistic vision and visual branding is communicated clearly to internal and external audiences and stakeholders.

Requirements

Position Requirements:

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as key strategies toward creating and supporting safe spaces that promote empathy, a sense of belonging and creativity

  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal and public speaking skills (bilingual Spanish preferred but not required)

  • Experience with Mailchimp, Squarespace, and social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok

  • Graphic design experience including knowledge of software such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator

  • Knowledge of contemporary art required; experience with arts and /or non-profit organizations is a plus; experience as a practicing artist essential

  • Experience working in a creative studio environment, schools and/or communities

  • Collaborative and creative team player that also works well on own initiative

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • The ability to travel within the region

  • Must be comfortable working in a rural desert environment
