The Vera List Center for Art and Politics (VLC) at The New School seeks a part-time, four-days per week Curatorial Assistant to join the team for the VLC’s 30th Anniversary Project to Bridge Politically Engaged Art Practices, Scholarship, and Public Engagement.

The Vera List Center for Art and Politics is a leading scholarly research center and dynamic public forum for art, culture, and politics. An initiative of the Schools of Public Engagement, the founding division of The New School, it serves a critical mission: to foster vigorous and diverse communities of artists, scholars, students, and policymakers who take creative, intellectual, and political risks to bring about positive change. An early leader in the field, the VLC was founded in 1992 and now offers a range of activities that encompass public programs, conferences, artist and student fellowships, classes, and books featuring art and research projects invested in the political agency of the arts. Occasionally, the Center also presents exhibitions, usually in collaboration with a partner organization. In all our activities, we strive to honor the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Working closely with the Curator, Senior Director/Chief Curator, and other staff at the Center, the Curatorial Assistant will provide a broad range of exhibition and program-related support as well as administrative assistance. The Curatorial Assistant will be involved in all aspects of curating, organizing, and promoting the Vera List Center’s programs. This entails research and assistance developing curatorial frameworks, managing public programs, publications, and occasional exhibitions related to the center’s main initiatives, the Vera List Center Fellows and the biennial Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice, as well as other project assignments primarily related to curatorial functions and the 30th Anniversary Project as assigned by the curatorial staff.

The Curatorial Assistant reports to the Curator and is expected to work 24 hours a week, Monday through Thursday, with some hours during evenings and occasionally on weekends for public events. The position is grant-funded and limited to three years.
